Buying a coffee from a coffee shop

When we first purchased our Cali we thought it would be the end of buying expensive coffee from coffee shops and motorway services as we would just make our own cuppa in the van , however the novelty has since warn off.

All the hassle of turning on the gas and waiting for the kettle to boil and then cleaning the cups and spoons, it was just a faff. It's the same with making sandwiches on the move , we always planned to buy a loaf of bread and some filling and make them in the van but it's just easy to buy pre packed sandwiches or from the bakers.

Don't get me wrong, we still cook and make tea when camping but not when traveling however we still feel guilty for doing this.

I don't. I can think of nothing better than rolling up at a Motorway Services and parking away from the rush. A walk to stretch my legs, a trip to the toilets and then purchase my takeaway coffee and wander back to my peaceful home on wheels to read my book/paper and drink my coffee in peace and quiet before continuing my journey. Heaven.:thumb

I'm with you too, we now buy coffee and sandwiches from shops and services but still feel a tiny bit guilty when we get back to the van.

We also enjoy many a take away in the van as well, especially Chinese as our favourite one is over an hour a away and it would be cold by the time we get it home so we now make an evening of it in the van.

At least the first two coffee / tea stops for us are provided from pre boiled water in vacuum flasks when travelling. So no waiting.

Sandwiches are usually pre-made too. Sometimes we'll toast them in the Ridgemonkey.

In between cuppas we just wipe the cups with a kitchen towel.

Often leave home with a coffee for the miss and some warm/hot water for minime/miss for milk and tea. We like to stop and sit to gether, often swivel the passenger seat to relax. Sandwiches are sometimes homemade or from the baker across the street. Good mixture and the thing with the go away with the take away and do a meal in the van is great and we like that too!

I agree. The Cali is a lifestyle option so dont feel guilty. You have the lovely option to have a Cali coffee, or a services coffee. The great thing is you have the choice, unlike car drivers, they have to get a services coffee if they want a coffee :thumb

and if theres a massive queue in starbucks, you can just think to yourself, sod this i'll make my own and even get a guaranteed table and seat whilst also saving yourself the £125 you were just about to pay for a coffee and a biscuit o_O :bananadance2

We will buy coffee from services but never sandwiches. Usually will have some rolls, pack of sliced cheese and sliced ham which we assemble in the Cali. Got into this habit on walking holidays easier and cheaper to buy and carry the constituent parts.

Good morning ,

When I get out for a drive I try to arrange my picnic at home, and have a coffee made in the van.

But it is is a wee bit cumbersome to take everything out of the lower tray, open the lid, open the gas and when ready to do everything in reverse. It would be nice if there would be a design update from VW to organise this a bit easier.

Regards,
Eberhard

We have never used our hob and have done over 100 nights away. We always ensure we are close to a pub or restaurant when camping. We are on holiday so why the hell would we want to cook

But you have the choice that is the difference.

Daily driver. Every lunch hour I buy a Coffee and a sandwich, sit in the van...and relax.

Then it’s back to work :(

We do cook a lot on weekend getaways. Part of the adventure. This weekend it lashed it down the whole time, when you’re cold and wet there’s nothing nicer than coming back to a warm van and a whistling kettle.

Why the devil did you get an ocean then?

Glad I got my Beach!!! - so easy for a quick brew -- and the extra wide double bed is *so* comfy

;)

An Ocean/SE is not just a Beach with a Kitchen, the base vehicles are different to start with.

Not sure the point of a California is to Prepare food/drinks, cook and sleep.
It just gives you the option, if you want to.

I like to explore the places I visit and that means trying out local cafes and restaurants etc.
Not saying we eat out every night, but we choose what ever direction we want.

We also sleep in hotels on our big trips. After a week in the van, I like to unwind at a fancy place and live it up for a night or two and then back to the van. Or perhaps we are in for a bad few days weather and think sod it. Hotel time.
That’s the beauty of the Cali, its a go anywhere do anything machine.

True! Its doesn't have to replace hotels and coffee shops, just compliment them :)
