Chains for 235/55/R17 T6.1 -- roofbox says "vehicle and tyre size combination is not suitable for any traditional chains, and most automatic chains"

Hi
I got Goodyear 9mm chains on Amazon. It's the T130 model. You can check your wheelsize by selecting 'Top highlights" or similar and going through the list of tyre wheel combos. They fitted fine on my drive and nowhere near the suspension. I have no idea how tough they are or how they are tested. I have original 235/55 17 winter tyres from vw.

About £30.

Try the group shop campervanbits they list a suitable set but we’re out of stock when i tried
Be careful, they will happily sell you the right fit for the tyre, but the tyre/chain combo is not necessarily recommended by VW for the vehicle. This is due to inside clearance issues caused by wide UK spec tyres.

Hopefully someone who has used them on an actual journey will report back and say that although it’s very tight it doesn’t foul the suspension struts, inc on full lock.

Good question. I’ve just put one on the passenger side. There is enough clearance for me to slide my fingers between the strut and the chain. My knuckles are a very tight fit. So, 2cm of clearance. Not being an expert in this, I’m not sure if that’s enough of a safety margin or not.

What happens when it's on full lock and going over bumps?

Our manual says 215 65 suitable for chains so that's what we have always used as we had a house in the Pyrenees and regularly encountered snow.

A quick google search comes up with this answer to the clearance question:

For safe operation, you should aim for a minimum clearance of around 15mm (0.59 inches) between your snow chain and the strut, allowing for some movement of the chain while driving; however, this can vary depending on the specific chain design and your vehicle's geometry, so always consult your vehicle manufacturer's guidelines and check for potential contact points before driving with chains installed.

I think I’m happy enough with 20+mm of clearance
