Cleaning chrome

Looking for some advice on cleaning chrome.
have some spots and a little slight rust discolouration on the tailgate chrome protector and the side bars.
Nothing serious but inwould just like to freshen them up.
I wondered if Wd40 is okay to use? or just old fashioned elbow grease? Keen not to scratch esp as I believe most trim is just plastic coated.

The traditional way is autosol

trim is either plastic, (chrome looking) no rust or
metal stainless (no rust) or
chrome plated steel with a copper base layer with chromium laid over (base metal corrodes )

We occasionally use Autosol on our chromed stainless side bars and bumper trim.

Rhubarb leaves, boil in water for about 30 minutes and use the resulting liquid when cool.
