Crosswind Assist

Hi all,

We've had our T6.1 nearly 12 months now and have a few times driven in windy conditions but have never felt the crosswind assist do anything, looked through the settings in Driver Assist (see picture) and nothing mentions it. I rechecked the brochure from when we ordered it in June 2021 and it definitely says it should have it (see picture).

Vehicle was delivered August 2022, does anyone know where I can confirm or check we have it before contacting the dealer to query it?

What would that show ? I’ve had 2 vans with & 2 vans without WA & they’ve all had ESP button.

I’ll have a look at the menus on the current van in the morning. WA as quite intrusive on the Grand California overtaking lorries, as soon as you got the nose in front it would slam on the brakes on one side of the van knocking about 5mph off your speed.
It’s nowhere near as noticeable in an Ocean.

If you haven’t noticed it, then I would say it’s working fine or you don’t need it.

Unlike the other functions/options detailed on the MFD in the OPs photo the Crosswind Assist is part of the ESP ( Electronic Stability Programme ) system and cannot be switched Off preferentially, only the whole ESP function with the dash button, if you have the button. Some manufacturers don’t give you the option with ESP.

I have never noticed any breaking or interruption when passing lorries and today with a couple of paddlebaords on the roof it was noticeable the wind buffeting so I'm convinced I don't have it yet believe it should be on my vehicle ‍.

Did a little digging on this - like a lot of VW assist systems it's always more compex than it needs to be.

Cross wind assist (called side wind assist in EU) is standard on all Calis (and 6.1s) from at least Jan 2020.

The option itself is std when you look at the spec and it's just inbuilt with ESP. The only indication it is doing anything is if you are driving in wind and it kicks in your ESP light will come on momentarily while it corrects. Then it goes off. You may not feel anything. You don't switch it on or off, there is no menu option that details it.

It's not clear if you switch ESP off it also deactivates, but one assumes it does.

I'd be surprised if the T6.1 has a brake based crosswind assist considering it has module 44 (J500) the electric steering assist. If I dig around in module 44 I see OBDeleven referencing a setting called "straight line running" and live data called "straight line running correction."

But if anyone has more specific data please chime in.

See my link to the press release from 2020 above and the options. It's there but I think your question is "brake assisted?" - the (silent) videos from VW on YT show braking on the video, which is more to ESP and is effectively how side assist works. See article.

I'm not convinced you would see it separately in the ODB if there are no parameters to modify.

I think the OP was asking if they have it - they have, it's std equipment. Exactly when it works seems less defined.

Cross Wind Assist

The Transporter 6.1 is equipped as standard with a new Cross Wind Assist feature. When the vehicle speed reaches 50mph, Cross Wind Assist is automatically activated. It then continually monitors the vehicle and its direction of travel. Should there be a sudden cross wind, the system uses the Electronic Stability Control programme and targeted braking of individual wheels to steer against it.

Looks like an in house MB setup

Only active at 50mph or more.

Thanks all, I'll assume I have it then and just haven't been in windy enough conditions to notice it yet..
