I've discovered that dealer bought van I'm considering at auction. Auction only mentioned some cosmetic issues but wondered if this is a red flag. Why would previous owner sell at auction? Any advice?

How old is the van? Maybe it’s not the previous owner that sold it at auction but a Dealer that did ?

To be honest, I’m not surprised it went through auction, I’m guessing taken in p/ex or Dealer bought it and then moved it on, especially if approaching winter time. Nothing negative about the van. Just my view, but, do your homework. Was the previous owner a member on here ?

Sounds normal to me. Previous owner probably part exchanged at a franchised non VW main dealer.
As part of the franchise conditions they may have an age limit on used vehicles. So they would either pass on to another used dealer or straight to auction.

I part exchanged my 10yr old 180 4 Motion SE to a main dealership. It was too old for their Used stock so went to auction. Normal practice .

10 years old, last V5 issued 9 years ago
Really normal at that age. Main dealers seek most older (used to be 4 years or older or high mileage) stock onto other dealers who either sell on again or go to auction, or sometime send stock direct to auction. More profit if moved on quickly if not suitable for the forecourt.
