We have the Discover Media System in our 2016 Ocean. Within the last few months it's started playing up, it's not all the time and when we had the cam belt changed just before lock down we asked the garage to take a look, but it seemed fine and responsive to them. We're tried carefully cleaning the screen to ensure that's ok.

Faults we're having;
- randomly switching between radio stations every 10 seconds.
- Not responsive to touch on the screen
- It's recently even randomly made a telephone call when we were driving.

I'll obviously get it booked in to get it looked at when we can, however wondered if anyone else had similar problem and what their solution was. We're on the 5 year warranty and so hopefully it'll be covered and sorted at no charge to us. Thanks

I've never heard of anything like this before but my advice would be to log every glitch including the date, time and detailed description of the problem and get it booked in for a check up ASAP. You shouldn't have to pay anything as it will be covered under warranty. The Factory Extended Warranty is as good as the original three year warranty so don't be fobbed off by the service manager. He/she doesn't want any claim that VW won't pay out on to come from his/her budget. So hold your ground and insist they get to the bottom of it as a legitimate warranty claim at no cost to you.. Even if they find nothing you have logged the fault on their system. If it happens again you have can refer to the previous job and the paperwork that that will have generated.

Good luck.

Has it ever had any liquid spilt on it that might have run down the bottom of the screen?

Not to my knowledge. Would this impact the effectiveness of the screen then?

Just an update. Took our Cali into the dealer and a new media unit has been fitted under warranty :thumb
That 5 year extended warranty is proving to be a bargain!

May be of interest to those with touch screen issues:

To answer your questions:

re faulty screen: we are aware of a fault with ALL VW Discover Media Navigation Systems (part number ending with ‘C’). EVERY single one of them will
fail at some point due to what must be a manufacturing problem. Strangely, it only seems to happen after the 3 year warranty has expired!!! (very suspicious!)
Unsurprisingly, VW are not admitting any liability!
The problem is caused by one of 3 factors and we can ALWAYS repair them. The cost depends on which fault and we can provide an exact and no obligation
quote once we have run (free of charge) diagnostics on the unit.

You are welcome to refer your forum members to: https://www.satnavsystems.com/diagnostics-repairs/
and also: https://www.satnavsystems.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Repair-Form-2019.pdf

re T6.1: we do offer some upgrades for he T6.1 already (Rear View Cameras, Tow Bars etc) and are working on other solutions (Navigation upgrades etc) and will add theseto our website in due course.

In the meantime if anyone needs anything, they are welcome to contact us via: https://www.satnavsystems.com/contact-us so we can try to assist.

Thank you again for all your kind words and recommendations and we look forward to being of further service in future.

Best regards,

You're right about the fault screens happening after 3 years....! Screen has started going mad on my 2016 Beach, making unit un-usable :-(
Anyone know of good replacement options?
Do the latest units last longer?
Any recommended installers in Devon who are not Vw dealers (cos they're all useless!).

Thankd!

The company above can fix your unit, IMO much cheaper than a replacement head unit, they will carry out a free diagnostic and quote you for the remedial works require.

Hmmm my MY18 head unit occasionally locks up or turns off. Not often but sounds like it could get worse..! Best get it in under warranty!

I've managed to get agreement that my 2016 Beach's Discover Media unit will get a warranty replacement.
This isn't happening at a VW dealer (long story, but they're all useless in Devon) so I just need to check whether anyone knows the following....
Is there is a specific model number or hardware version I should get it replaced with?
Or even a later version which would fit too?

Thanks!

My unit is a “G” version, which “is not prone to screen freeze”

I hope that helps

edit, speak to Sat Nav System, they will advise you and may well be able to supply and fit your warranty unit ( they are a VW approved supplier)

I've tried to phone them, but unless you know the extension number, it's impossible to get to speak to anyone. I gave up after two attempts at navigating their automated phone system!!! :-( Shame...

What part number does the G model translate to then? Are there even later models, or different VW ones which fill the same gap?

Lots of companies struggling at the mo with phone contact, try dropping then an email?

It behaved for 38 mins!
Back to the search for a specialist in the North West!

Might be worth asking vw Liverpool.
I had a problem with my new 6.1 coast and the sat nav not showing where I was. After a lot of investigation they fixed it.

We have just had our new Cali into the dealer to have software updated for exactly the same reason. Took them 5 days to get the software for tech support in Germany.
