Driver's door electric window fault

We have a 2009 Cali. Fifteen minutes into our outing today, the driver's door window descended without the switch being touched. Eventually it ascended after a delay between the switch being operated and the glass raising. During the remaining twenty minutes of the journey, it happened again on two or three occasions, partially opening and partially closing. It seemed to have a mind of its own, although there might have been a pattern of delayed responses to the switch being operated, with several clicks coming from the mechanism as if it was encountering initial resistance. By the end of the return journey, it appeared to be working normally. The van stands outside and hasn't been driven for three weeks so I am hoping it was just damp ingress in cold weather and was rectified by the van warming up. Anyone had a similar experience or can offer an explanation/advice please.

I would have a quick look under the drivers seat as it is quite common for wires to get damp & corrode causing unusual electrical issues. A possibility :thumb

Kev, thanks for the response. The cables and the area under the driver's seat feel dry and there is no sign of corrosion. Tried the window this morning. It clicked three or four times, dropped slightly and then closed. Since then it has been totally dead. The nearside window continues to work normally from the adjoining button. Does anyone know if it is possible to prise out the control panel containing the buttons for the windows, central locking and door mirrors.

We currently have a problem with both our front windows on our 56 Cali.
Initially showed as an intermittent failure to lower, especially after period of inactivity and damp weather. A drive of > 15 mins tended to cure the problem! - especially annoying when you've booked the van into dealer to have it checked out!
Main dealer has suggested that it is likely to be the driver side 'driver' unit which controls both windows. Total failure now, and replacement 'driver' unit is in the region of £155, plus fitting.
Just waiting a suitable time to book it in.

Gulp our drivers window was dead as a dodo when I took the cali out recently but was fine the next day. Not driven it for a couple of weeks now but I suspect it will get worse. Could do without another expensive fix, still haven't got round to sorting our control panel display yet.

The outcome of my 05 January post was the replacement of the window's motor assembly - £150 + labour.

Slight case of mild panic - fired up the cali before going out last night, tried the window, it opened ok but wouldn't close. Was just about to run off and find a bin bag to tape over it and it closed by itself. Definitely the same fault as the OP.
The service light has come on so will get it done then. Damn!

Further to our previous post the offside window unit has now failed and neither window will operate. Have part on offer £148 inc VAT.
VW California specialist technician has told me fitting is an 'easy' job so I'll have a go and report on success….fingers now crossed!

Probably not helped either by the fact that if you open a window when its wet the water drips straight down onto the switch assembly. Not one of VWs better bits of design. :crazy
