i am an admirer of the DoE but I do think the wall to wall stuff on the BBC was counterproductive.
However the BBC R4 program by Edward Stourton was good and I would recommend. Also Any Questions with Max Hasting, Simon Schama , Jenny Bond , Lord Hennesy was informative.
When asked of his legacy one of them said that in many countries Conservation was seen as a prerogative of the Liberal view. However mercifully in the UK conservation and concern about the environment was felt right across the political spectrum. This was in no small degree down to the DoE and his son. It may be his most important legacy.
There was also a story Jenny Bond told ...when at the ceremony in Africa when a country was taking their rightful independence the Duke whispered to the President Elect. “ it’s not too late to change your mind” ...with a wink!
Both thesevprograms available on bbc sounds
