Not really a cry for help, just a bit of info for you all really. Sorry, it does go on a bit!
My EGR valve failed end Feb, less than a year after the VW warranty expired. It's quite an expensive repair at around £1100 so I had contacted VWCS to see what they had to say.
Anyway I was told that they wouldn't talk figures until it had been diagnosed at a VW centre (I'd taken it to the nearest independent specialist as I don't have a local centre). So, whilst it was booked in for the roof repair at Heritage I thought I'd kill two birds and booked it in for this, too.
They did the diagnostics and confirmed the EGR valve (but not the cooler) was faulty. However these are notorious for being difficult to take apart - the valve replacement would cost IRO £500, but valve and cooler is £1100. I don't see why I should pay for a part I don't need, just because it's difficult to take apart. VW weren't having any of it and suggested that the goodwill contribution "won't be what you expected"
Anyway, we got the warranty team at Heritage involved and - purely by chance - we're buying (now bought) a new Polo and I asked them to mention this - later that day I got the call to say VW are covering all of the cost of the parts and 50% of labour, so down to around £150!
Ethics aside, I'm happy with that, but now I find I must wait "indefinitely" for the arrival of the valve as it's on back-order and they won't know when it will arrive (and would only get a couple of days advance warning that it's on the way). I've a Cali loaner from Heritage but this seems daft. Plus I'm probably holding up their roof repair work as I've taken one of their two loaners out of action.
So just in case you're looking at that seemingly benign orange warning light on the dash, you could be in for a bit of a wait!
