Hi. Im thinking of getting a new EGR valve, as a preventative measure on my 2015 SE that has a C suffix EGR. Do I need to get the cooler changed aswell. Ive seen pics of the corrosion , and it looks more like its in the cooler veins, but im no sure. Thanks

Cooler fins are the culprit. D cooler is better but not completely 100%. Tamfet kit

It’s supposedly the EGR cooler.

2014 180 on 115,000 miles. Oil consumption between services 0mls. Original EGR valve and cooler. No suffix.

I would suggest, if you believe the theory, having an oil analysis done.

I thought you had a new EGR valve at 900 miles?

I have had an oil analysis, it’s normal, but I thought as soon as that shows a problem the damage has started. And I’m at 40,000 miles. Problems tend to start around 60 I read. Do you not think it is a problem then?

Yes, but that was fitted 2 weeks after I picked it up, and that was due to an electrical fault . so it was a 2014 EGR from stock. So as far as I am concerned that was the EGR the vehicle came with. The vehicle has done 115,000 miles the EGR 114,100 miles.

I , personally, do not think the EGR is the root cause of the problem. It is a symptom. Otherwise EVERY 180 would suffer this problem. They do not.

There is a combination of circumstances that cause the alloy cooling fins to breakdown releasing Al particles that damage the engine. Driving style, oil contamination, excess heat or a cool engine. Most vehicles that are affected, post 2012MY { different problem 2010/2011 engines } are a relatively low milage for a commercial vehicle and are not run regularly .
