Hi. Im thinking of getting a new EGR valve, as a preventative measure on my 2015 SE that has a C suffix EGR. Do I need to get the cooler changed aswell. Ive seen pics of the corrosion , and it looks more like its in the cooler veins, but im no sure. Thanks

Cooler fins are the culprit. D cooler is better but not completely 100%. Tamfet kit

It’s supposedly the EGR cooler.

2014 180 on 115,000 miles. Oil consumption between services 0mls. Original EGR valve and cooler. No suffix.

I would suggest, if you believe the theory, having an oil analysis done.

I thought you had a new EGR valve at 900 miles?

I have had an oil analysis, it’s normal, but I thought as soon as that shows a problem the damage has started. And I’m at 40,000 miles. Problems tend to start around 60 I read. Do you not think it is a problem then?

Yes, but that was fitted 2 weeks after I picked it up, and that was due to an electrical fault . so it was a 2014 EGR from stock. So as far as I am concerned that was the EGR the vehicle came with. The vehicle has done 115,000 miles the EGR 114,100 miles.

I , personally, do not think the EGR is the root cause of the problem. It is a symptom. Otherwise EVERY 180 would suffer this problem. They do not.

There is a combination of circumstances that cause the alloy cooling fins to breakdown releasing Al particles that damage the engine. Driving style, oil contamination, excess heat or a cool engine. Most vehicles that are affected, post 2012MY { different problem 2010/2011 engines } are a relatively low milage for a commercial vehicle and are not run regularly .

Hi Welshgas
I have had my 180 for about 2 years now and love it , what would you say were the key things that made your 180 experience last so long , as I am keen to make mine last as long as possible, many thanks for any information

Hi golfnut. This is an old thread. If your interested i fitted a D cooler and a tafmet Mine is now 60k and going strong. I do an oil analysis every year and its normal. I use about a litre of oil every 5 k whick is normal for the engine. Ill be interested in welsh gas reply. I dont do lots of little trips , but a couple of big tours each year ( currently on our way back from greece via albania and the Balkans

Annual service . DSG and Haldex oil changes 2 yearly.
Oil consumption was 500 mls 1st year in which I covered 20,000 miles. Subsequent yrs milage was under 20, 000 mls/year and I never required any oil top ups between annual oil changes.
140,000 miles in 10 yrs. original 2014 EGR. nb; EGR replaced at 900 miles due to electrical problem. The EGR had no suffix, A,B,C or D.
Used as a daily driver but shortest trip was 30+ miles.
Apart from brake pads all round at 70,000 miles + front discs and a faulty ABS sensor at about 110,000 miles, there were no mechanical faults.
5 full sets of tyres the last 3 being Michelin Cross Climate.

Thanks for the information, it’s nice to hear someone have a good experience with this 180 engine, fresh oil and hot running appears to be the key , they cant all be bad surly

Tamfet at 44k - annual oil changes

No oil consumption / now at 86.5k / 10yrs old .......... came back from Wales last weekend and 45mpg.
