Hello there,
Thank you very much for letting me join.
I’ve wanted a campervan and in particular a VW campervan for as long as I can remember, just never been able to afford it.
Last year we bought a Mazda bongo, our Dolly. She’s 20 years old not fully converted as she still has all her seats but does have a kitchen and and quite a bit of storage, however discovered that I needed a fair bit more as I am an amateur photographer and a new computerised telescope owner… so I need a van that I can take out somewhere where it’s pitch black in the middle of the night look at the stars look at the planets jump in the van and be instantly warm, unfortunately Dolly couldn’t do that and it would cost too much to sort out and change.

So last weekend we bit the bullet and put a deposit down on a VW California Ocean Surf 2024 model, apparently the very last one to be sold in Jersey!

This model didn’t come with fog lights, parking assist, rear camera or an awning so we’ve ordered an awning, rear and front dash cam, and window deflector on the driver and passenger doors.
We are stupidly excited to get hold of it and go off and spend hours in it knowing that we will be nice and warm make a cup of tea and stay wherever we want to be for as long as we want.
Looking forward to sharing our story as well as reading all of yours.
Donna & Jon.

Enjoy your California when it arrives!

We fell in love with camper vans through a Bongo too - she cost next to nothing to buy and an arm-and-a-leg to keep on the road! Sadly she died on the M4 on the way to a festival.

We coped without for a bit, and then resolved to get something newer and less costly to run during the pandemic. Second hand campervans were ridiculously expensive at the time so we ordered a new one. The six months we had to wait while the order was fulfilled was pretty excruciating - but we have no regrets!

:welcome

Got any Photos yet?
Finally got some decent weather, which means we can try out the Bellows topper and the thermal windscreen cover! Also had to go at rolling up the awning properly, I didn’t bother with the table because I’ve got a little one! Hope you like the pictures! IMG_8446.jpegIMG_8452.jpeg

Looks great but wouldn't have bothered with the thermal roof top cover unless skiing / wintering in the moutains - have you got an Isotop - much more useful and less hassle on a normal day to day bssis ? Enjoy

Hiya, I don’t believe the rooftop cover is thermal, the windshield cover is though.
Thanks - really looking forward to getting out and about and using it.

Fantastic!
I love visiting my Aunt who lives in Trinity. Jersey is very special to me, after many holidays since the 1980's. I did camp on the island once, with a mate near the airport I think, but usually stay in her mansion! Are there many places where you could wild camp?

Hi there , there isn’t much in the way of wild camping on Jersey , unfortunately you need permits, an annual permit and then you’ve gotta get a permit for the day you wanna stay over and then it’s a maximum of 12 hours in 24 or some such red tape, bit of a nightmare really, however there are three really good campsites on Jersey, The Palms, Rozel and Beauveland, but we plan to come over to the UK a bit more often as we have family there and love going up to West Wales.

Wasn't commenting so much on the thermal properties of the roof cover but the hassle of putting it up and how useful it is compared to an "permanently" attached Isotop (i have owned both). More info on here https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/search/584754/?q=isotop&o=relevance

Is that a farm where you live - i.e. where the picture are taken ? If so if you ever fancy a swap (just for parking vans even) welcome to ours in the Peak District also an old farmhouse (running water and toilet facilities). Between Buxton and Bakewell
