Hi all, I am a relative newbie and want some advice about gas. I have bought a second hand VW California Ocean, with a gas bottle installed. There is a sticker on the boot that shows a date of 24/6/25. I presume this related to the gas bottle that’s installed.

Does it mean it will expire then? Or does it need a gas service?

Please advise. Many thanks

The sticker is only for German owners. The date on the orange gas hose in the bottle locker is applicable for safety reasons.

So where is the best place to get this checked please? Is it a caravan shop that sells gas fittings? Many thanks for your help. Always worried about gas! Never actually used it before so I bought something that I don’t think has been tested.

In Germany they require you to do a gas test regularly. In the UK they don’t.
I have a 2008 California and never had it done. There are 2 T25s on my road that date from the 1980s. They still work. Gas has a smell added to help you see if there is a leak.

The gas is heavier than air and if leaks would sink. Under the bottle there is a hole that leads to the underside of the van for this to escape. Above the bottle there is the air tight black lid. A good VW design.

In the California there is a regulator that attaches to the bottle and a rubber hose that connects to a metal pipe that goes to the burner. If I smelt anything I would spend £20 on a new regulator.

If worried, close the bottle - a couple of twists - when not using it.

Or Campersales do the check

I agree that it’s not necessary but if you are still keen to get it done I would try a converter or garage / body shop that specialises in motorhomes and ask for a habitation check.

I've heard that there are some campsites (not only in Germany) that check and may refuse entry. Mine expired and I'm planning to have it done before the summer.

That sounds like a rumour spread by the people who want to sell you a gas check when you aren't legally required to. I have never been to any campsite that wants to know anything more than the size of your van, most aren't even bothered about that.

I live in Germany, as others have said the sticker is related to a gas check for the gas cooker. As I have a Beach and have never used (or will ever use) the inbuilt gas cooker I took the sticker off once it expired so as to avoid pointless checks. I was told by TUV (the checking authority) that was fine as long as the gas connection was never going to used, if I ever did want to use it (or planned to sell the vehicle) I would be required to do a gas check then. The gas check is pretty much just a replacement of the gas hose, no doubt they charge a stupid amount for half a metre of hose.
