Hazzy Dayz review

We decided before delivery that we wanted to upgrade the radio in our California from a RCD310 (albeit with DAB) to one with Sat Nav and to add Bluetooth and MDI. We also managed to talk ourselves into a reversing camera.

The two companies we had to choose from to do this work were forum discount provider vag-tec and Hazzy Dayz.

Hazzy Dayz were much more responsive to my enquiries and questions and local enough to where I work for them to do the work at their premises (Reversing Camera = lots of dismantling) but more expensive; though after haggling and opting for a 'second-hand' head unit they were more or less on price parity. We nearly opted for the RNS315 as it supports DAB but the much higher resolution screen of the RNS510 (plus its factory fit status) swung it for us in the end; we have the option to part-ex the head unit they fitted for a DAB capable 510 unit when one becomes available from VW (expected soon; the USA market already has a sirius xm version).

The work took pretty much a full day and our California (3 weeks old) was returned exactly as when left with them.

Fitting the genuine VW reversing camera involved them replacing the rear number-plate trim, which was sprayed in the correct colour ahead of the appointment. All the camera wiring was run alongside the existing loom. We get the camera display complete with indicated path that moves with the steering wheel on the RNS510 screen whenever the vehicle is in reverse. Having finally seen a factory reversing camera on an edition25 Caravelle last weekend I can confirm that our install is indistinguishable.

The other installations (MDI, Bluetooth, RNS510) were less intrusive and the 2nd hand unit looks as new in the dash. Bluetooth, and MDI function through the steering wheel and with the MFD (including Navigation too) as the factory intended. We've also gained an electronic compass on the regular MFD display, and the optical parking and aircon controls look much nicer than on the original 310 display. They also enabled voice control for me.

I have only one disappointment from the install and that is the bluetooth microphone in the headliner where we have a black grill over an existing panel rather than the 'factory' panel I had expected. On picking Gareth up on this he immediately ordered the panel that I gave him the part number for and will be fitting it for me once it arrives; I think this was just a case of their being many variants to cope with and a lack of specialist knowledge on the California model in particular. i'll report back on the final solution.

The reversing camera was mainly to address my wife's concerns about reversing such a large vehicle but I have to say the that its been enabling me to park in spaces i'd previously have chosen to avoid…

Definitely a thumbs up for Hazzy Dayz.

Simon

I have also had work done by Hazy Dayz. They supplied & fitted RNS510, Bluetooth & voice control in my Cali.
As Shambly says a perfect service, even drove cali round Markyate to check satnav was working OK.
I also had the issue with the mic mount panel & ended up getting it from VW & fitting myself. Cost £7 if I remember correctly. They said they thought it would have correct pannel as standard as the Caravelle does.

Yes they are slightly more expensive than VAG-TEC but given people have had problems contacting them it's not a biggie.
Highly recommended.

Can you let me know the part number for the Mic panel you have ordered. I have one which fits ok and is the right colour but the Mic is on the passenger side so I think it's for LHD models (Although I think I can modify it if I want to), I've not been able to find a different part number yet.

I got part number V7H0-858-122A-Y20 & is the same one Jamie found & used , photo in this thread

Yes I had to modify it, swap the two round bit over. Had to modify the lugs that they locate into in order to get them to fit. Also had to trim the mic on each corner.
A bit of a fiddle but I was fed up with mic dangling down from upper console !!

Yeah I had a look at it last week but decided to try and take a more 'professional' approach and find the RHD part

I noticed the plastic insert had a PN of 7L6 858 691A but I couldn't find another similar part.

The 'LHD' part has come in for me at Hazzy Dayz but I wonder, as with many other things California, whether there actually is a correct RHD part with the mic located as you'd expect?

Does anyone have a factory system and can it be seen if the mic is actually on the RHS?

I've also asked Gareth to try and track it down but it seems others have tried and failed...

I think the 2012 plates with factory fitted bluetooth have the mic mounted in the headlining just in front of the drivers head in a similar looking round trim to what is in the trim pannel we've been looking at.

Yes, you appear to be correct - we spotted the mic on Steve's factory fit bluetooth premium at Hollands Wood and took some photos on my wifes phone. I'll post them up at some point.

What HazzyDayz did for me today was fit the LHD factory panel but use a Touareg microphone clip within the RHS aperture rather than having to modify & swap the two apertures over; they then swapped the mic for one to fit the Touareg clip.

It looks much better than the original grill.

Photo would be good Simon.

Sorry for not posting pictures earlier myself - I sometimes miss topics due to Tapatalk issues (more on that soon!).

Yes that is what I've seen in a 2012 plate cali. May contact Hazy Dayz about getting one fitted.

Does anyone have the PN for this microphone? I can't seem to find it although it appears to be used with the Noise Cancelling Voice system.

Anyone looking for one of these microphone covers the number is 7H5 857 155A Y20.

I was hoping you'd successfully fitted it :thumb - though my mic in the centre panel as per LHD seems to be picking up just fine...

Oh I see. for some reason I assumed you had it already :doh

Fitting was scheduled for today but work and then rain stopped play. Maybe at the weekend now.

Not sure I'm looking forward to it though.

Do you know if you have spare microphone cable to go the extra distance?

Fitted this yesterday, turned out to be an epic.

I spent a while making a nice template, marking out the roof lining, checking and re-checking.

Making the first cut was a little bit of a butt clenching moment. :shocked

I had previously installed the microphone cable up the N/S door pillar but it was about 6-8 inches too short to reach across to the new position above the driver so it became a bit of a mission to remove it and re route it to the drivers door pillar.

All in all though very pleased with it but I've yet to try it in anger.
