Heater too warm

I have a VW California 2002 Event, T4. We're traveling in the mountains and use the heater at night. I've got it at the lowest setting, but I still feel it's getting too warm. The inside temp is 25-26degC.

I thought it referenced against the inside temp and regulated itself, but it's always on and pushing out heat.

Any advice?

There is a sensor inside that regulates the night heater but it only turns the fan down rather than switching the heater off. The idea is that the heater is more efficient electrically ticking over than switching off and starting up again each time. I’m a new Exclusive owner and yet to sleep in the van as yet but have been testing the battery capacity this week by leaving the heater on. I will be setting the timer so the heater comes on in the morning and opening the roof vent to regulate the temp
