Hi all, I’ve been lurking on here a while now, thanks all for the information it’s been invaluable.

We are currently looking at buying an ex demo Beach.

The poor standard headlights on the Beach are well documented on this forum. Sorry if this has been asked before.

Question is, would you let that stop you buying a van which otherwise ticked the right boxes? Very few demo vans out there with upgraded twin halogen or L.E.D. lights.

Has anyone bought one of the non VW kits available such at Transporter HQ, and had a go themselves?

The thought of pulling a nearly new van apart is not a good one, I’d be nervous about doing it on such a costly vehicle, although it looks quite simple on YouTube. There is also the warranty issue to consider.

The van would be our main car and daily vehicle so lights which are poor would be disappointing after such a massive purchase!

Thanks all.

Neilos.

Wether you replace the standard headlights with 3rd Party or VW H7 headlights you will need to code them in to get the full advantage as the H7 lights have twin bulbs, rather than twin filament H4 bulbs and both come on when on Mainbeam.
Or you could hand over about £3000 to Hazydayz and have the Genuine VW LED headlights fitted.

Never found the headlights that bad I really don't see the issue personally, but then I drove a T25 for a few years so anything seems amazing next to that.

I think many modern drivers are used to HID lights which are extremely bright (but quite unpleasant coming the other way imho). I would personally try the stock ones and see what you think before you spend lots of cash on a replacements.

To replace the lights on a T5 you have to remove the front grill and bumper so I can't imagine its different on the t6 facelift.

Hi Nelios and :welcome
I have the LED headlights in my current van, I used to have a T5.1, T5 and T2.with standard lights.

The LED headlights do give out a far greater amount of light, however, would Not discount an ideal spec van because of the lack of LED lights, no way.

It’s a nice to have scenario not a must have.

You can improve the poor standard bulbs with aftermarket bulbs that improve the light output no end. (Lots of makes out there)

I did the bulb upgrade on my T5.1 and could clearly notice the difference in the new bulbs.

Don’t let you perception turn you off an ideal vehicle for your needs.

Chip £100 of the price you had in mind and that will pay for the updated bulbs and fitting. :bananadance2

I had a beach with those standard lights for 2 years. Never ever found it an issue. Why people these days need 2 white dwarf class a stars on their bonnet is beyond me. I think all cali owners are old and need their eyes testing

Depends a bit on where you drive and how much at night in my opinion. I’m in Scotland and drive a lot at night rurally. I’ve had the Std lights on a previous van and now have specced LED on new van as so much better

But the original question was would you avoid an ideal spec van if it didn’t have LED headlights?
I have nd love them but I would not exclude a van purely because it did not have LED headlights

Indeed, that but fell off my reply ! I would consider the points I made and then the price of the van and work out I’d you went full bhuna and put the OEM lights on at 3k would it stack up. I missed out on a van that had the right spec bar some minors and LeDs but would have retrofitted. As it turned out a new one of perfect spec was a differential of 3k so not much in it.

Bought my Cali with standard headlights, would have liked the led’s but defiantly not a dealbreaker I think

Thanks all really helpful. Am I right in thinking the standard Beach headlights use the same H4 as the Transporter? And also that the twin halogen upgrade give the beach the same headlights at the Ocean? I’ve had dealers give me about 3 different answers on this! Help much appreciated, cheers.

Basically Yes. But I believe the H7 headlights are an Option on the Beach as are the LED headlights on both the Beach and Ocean.

I have the H7 headlights on my T5.1. Still all the original bulbs until now. 9 years, 130 000 km.
I couldn't be bothered with a € 1500 cost to have Xenon (no leds in this vehicle possible), and the risk to need to spend € 250 per Xenon bulb that dies on me.
Let alone for full LED headlights when they break down. It will be around € 3000 per headlight, if you can't replace the LED's alone.

I have LEDs (on all my vehicles) and I can say they are excellent. I did get flashed but you can adjust them down which I have done.

£700 each side from the T6 forum shop.

I had mine done bt transporter HQ and it made a big difference so no it wouldnt be a dealbraker for me. Since I have taken them out to replace bulbs so wouldnt have a problem fitting them myself.

If you do want to upgrade your lights to HID ones, it is not just a simple bulb swap. These high output lamps have to comply with the relevant legislation and will need headlight washers and auto-leveling linked to the suspension to comply. I think this is now covered in the MOT.

The Hazzy Dayz VW original one's compy, but consequently cost over £3k fitted.

I have the led headlights and they are superb. I only have them though as I bought my van second hand and all the rest of the spec fitted my needs, the headlights were a bonus. It wouldn't have stopped me buying it though if it had had normal lights. The only thing is now I panic about breaking one as they are sooo costly to replace where as normal headlights are very cheap.

I wouldn't let the H4 lights put you off, I ended up with H4 lights on my new van due so a series of cock ups and I recently purchased a brand new pair of genuine H7 headlights from eBay for £271 and fitted them. Light output is far better and I'm happy (LED would be better still no doubt).

The H7 lights will need coding with VCDS or similar to allow the dip and main beams to be on at once. Usually a local specialist should be able to do this for you , especially if you pay them to fit the lights.

Did you fit them yourself. If yes, what was the procedure ?
Have you the reference on Ebay ?
Thanks.

I fitted them myself using the TransporterHQ fitting video as a reference.

It took an hour or so, lots of plastic fixings to remove but nothing particularly difficult, it would be easier with two people but I did it on my own. The hardest part is getting the bumper off once the fixings are removed as it's largely held on with plastic snap in fixings so lots of wiggling and pulling is required.

I purchased from Mr Auto on eBay but they don't appear to have any stock at the moment, back when they did I put a watch on the lights and after a while the price dropped to £135 or so each. They arrived in a day and were brand new boxed units. It's amazing how bit the boxes are!

They also sell original units in the forum shop on the other van forum but I think they are a bit dearer than I paid

Thank you very much for these clear explanations. I would also like to replace my H4 headlights with H7s.
But I still hesitate

My OCEAN has the stock H7,s as I didnt want LEDS personally and Im quite content with the performance, like you would expect and I have cars with HID,s and all that. If the Beach has H4,s then as suggested an H7 upgrade would be on my list and worth it for the cost.
