High Roof Joint repair

Hello,

I've a california camper club T4 - 93 which was painted two years ago. today the joint that seals the high roof to the van has detached in some areas, retaining water and promoting rust.

Now i need to re.repair that area (joint seal) and paint it.

Although i don't know what kind of solution can i apply to solve this issue. does it requires a specific silicone/mass?

should I apply fibre glass over the joint??

I would appreciate much your advise on this matter.

Many thanks
Thiago

Thiago,

Can you post a photo as it’s always easier that way. ?

It should in theory be a simple fix.

Hi.
here is some photos.
i'm afraid that there's rust underneath the roof..and if so, it doesn't matter to fix only the superficial (repaint and reseal)...the roof might have to be taken out to treat the rust....
what would you recommend??

Ooh dear. I won’t tell you what I’d do if it were me but it would involve a for sale advert!

The honest answer, take the roof off and repair it properly. There is no real fix. Rust will just keep coming back if it’s not treated properly. Sorry gone the bearer of bad news.

Can you access the roof surface from inside the top? If so spray it with a rust inhibitor and Waxoyl.

What Sidepod said , that looks quite advanced, roof off in my opinion, wouldn’t have a clue where to start . I had a problem with water ingress on a rear corner after a bad frost, dryer everything internal, hot waxoyl injected from outside, and then re apply silicone sealant

Thanks, I am afraid I would have to get the roof off and fix all the rust. Job definitely too big for me so need some qualified garage to do it. I will cover it with a adhesive silicon as a temporary solution thou. Thanks

You could take the van to a converter that specialises in aftermarket high tops. We purchased ours from Autohaus in Minehead. Had it 3.5 years now and the customer service we have experience has been first class. Am sure they would have a solution.

Need to see inside what's going on. A specialist may be able to remove some of the sealent and put a small camera inside to view what's going on. They shouldn't rust that much in there. May be a case of remove seal, coat with a waxoil type from places like BiltHamber inside via small drill holes, re seal with black sikaflex.

Thanks! that's a great advice :) It gives me something to start a conversation with a garage.
