Do you have tow bar electrics by any chance? There will be an 'ignition off' permanent, fused feed from the primary battery present at your socket, it may be possible to splice into that feed with your solar panel feed at the socket.

Thanks for that. Its a very interesting thought , and I like it, as it makes use of the inbuilt protected & fused VW wiring loom a opposed to running something unshielded or having to "armour"it somehow if run externally.
I do have a towbar that I fitted myself along with all the electrics about a year back so will investigate - so I should have thought of it really, but I admit I didn't realise there was a permanent live in there.....prepare the multimeter, I shall try and find which one it is.
