We had a scary close encounter with immigrants at the port of Ouistreham last month!
Just as we approached traffic lights to the port where I had to slow down and stop at a red light we watched around half a dozen immigrants running behind a HGV belonging to DHL trying to get into the rear doors, at this point my Daughter spotted one running from a bush behind us and she shouted for me to lock the doors which I managed to do.When I stopped he tried the tailgate door but laughed as it locked with all doors !
If I hadn't locked in time he would have had a party with the food and booze but no room for a trip to GB!
So remember where your door lock is when travelling!

Having used this port a lot over the years, I suspected it was only a matter of time before this became an issue further west.

Interestingly there were no migrants to be seen at Hook of Holland in September this year. Haven't found that port yet it seems, but only a matter of time surely.

Wise to lock all of the doors as you approach the port gates.

We always lock the doors in dodgy areas in France and the UK!
So 98'ish tried to get in the UK in the last 10 days, i say keep them out and deport them straight away.
France is having a really bad time with illegal immigrants, but they send them back straight away. no appeal nothing. We should do the same in the UK

Ouistreham back in May. Immigrant got into boat but we reported him to the Gendarmes who eventually got him out, kicking the Gendarmes.

Travelled back through Ouistreham this morning (4/12/18) and latest immigrant tactic is that they stand on each side of all pedestrian crossings and step onto the crossing, from both sides, as you approach in an attempt to make you stop, I didn't as they are only step onto the crossing but not directly in front of you leaving just enough room to keep going with caution. 3 crossings this happened, at approx 7am. No Gendarmes in evidence until reaching the Port Book in area.

Numbers of immigrants were the highest seen to date, my 7th crossing this year.

You can get the doors to auto lock with devices like Carista, well worth doing. Check out the VCDS section of the forum to find someone nearby who can do that for you.

Was very unpleasant in August when we stayed on the campsite just on the roundabout. Wife really didn’t want to leave the site (or the van to walk around site!) - immigrants were hanging around in large gangs. Usually enjoy our little walk around, not this time. They might have totally ignored us but we just felt vulnerable. Shame.

I also have Carista if anyone in the area wants to meet up and have a go.

When we used to caravan we'd come back up France the day before the Ferry sailing and stop in the carpark near the fish market for the night and like you enjoy a last night/evening walk around. Sadly those days are gone and I feel really sorry for the village residents with the gangs roaming about and all the barriers/fencing that have been erected to keep them out.
The immigrants all appear to be of African origin, male and aged between 15 and 25 at a rough guess.

Your typical " refugee ", not.

Generally head back to Blighty through Le Havre and up to now not had or seen any issues re all the above, having said that the last trip we did was 2016, usually spend the last night in Honfleur which isn't too bad. 2017 we travelled back from the Hook to Felixstowe no problems there either.

Last three home bound trips 2 x Dunkirk, 1 x Calais. Dunkirk, sailed through. Calais 3 hours to go 4 kilometres, constant cat and mouse with the French police, who seemed to be performing their duties diligently and with energy.

Very noticeable change to the 'immigrant' situation at the Caen terminal during the past 18 months. Port terminal area is now totally fenced in with double fencing in areas, lorries are now put through a separate fenced off corridor and all are searched.
When disembarking at Portsmouth yesterday all the lorries were being stacked with a team of Border Agency Staff looking like they were about to do a full search. Lorries previously appeared to disembark and go straight out of the Port.

Anyone know if there are any problems at Santander or Bilbao ?

Came back via Bilbao a week ago and no issues other than having to open up the tailgate for the authorities to check inside - which might be normal but it was clear they were looking for people not contraband

Seems all routes into UK are used, found this bit of info.

I find it desperately sad that we don’t/can’t do more to help people stay in their home countries. It must be a real wrench to cut away from friends and family and cross continents in an attempt to reach a cold, wet and mostly unwelcoming country.

We do. It’s called the Foreign Aid Budget. Pity other countries don’t follow suit.

“ Unwelcoming country “. That’s a bit rich considering the response from some European Countries.

Each to their own but auto locking above 5mph is good to avoid forgetting

Not much good if the ii jumps in before, or just as, you set off.
