I'm looking for Some advice on how to install a new pop up tent for my T4 Transporter camper van. while I'm really practical with most DIY in the house I know next to nothing about cars or engines. is it feasible for me to consider installing the tent myself? does anyone have any tips on How to go about this job or would I be better off getting a mechanic to do the job? I live in Italy so I have that added bonus of language issues and lack of a VW help group locally.:D

Any help? DIY probably best option.

Hi,
I replaced my canvas last year with one purchased from BUS-OK.NL, they have a link on their website with some helpful installation tips:

The blog is in Dutch, but translate it.

Its a fiddly job, but not impossible, make sure young children are not around while you do the last parts as you will be using some bad words ;-)

My advice, remove the top front section of the upper bed and the mattress for easier access. Be careful removing the the rubber seal, if you pull it too hard it will break - it might be worth buying a new seal too - I didn't but in hindsight I wish I had (it would have made the job a little less worrying).

Anyway, more than one year on, the new canvas looks great and still fitting perfectly.

Good luck!

Apologies for going off-topic, but I cannot message you directly. I plan on moving to Italy and it appears I wouldn't be able to register my van there as imports need to meet Euro 6+ standards. Interestingly mine was originally registered in Italy and then exported to UK. My question is did you import your camper or did you buy in the EU?
Cheers
Chris

No problem. I bought my camper in Italy as I am resident here, so i have no advice unfortunately with importation of vehicles here. Having dealt with an import agency years ago regarding a different vehicle I know they can be a nightmare and the legislation is very tight. I know someone here who was importing a classic alfa romeo from England and it took about a year to get it done. he had to re-classify it as it wasn't considered old enough her to qualify as a classic car.
Good luck!

Thank you for the info. I was given the same company website but in german- https://www.bus-ok.de/ to look at by a vw outfitter here in Rimini. I'm in the process of buying it and I'll take you advice on buying the new seal too I think! Anything to make this easier. Luckily there are no tender ears likely to be corrupted by my language and the locals are quite used to hearing the sweary Irish that is my usual conversation.
Many thanks
