International driving licence post Brexit

The Eurocrat political elite spout threats and know fine well that most if not all is utter rubbish. The international driving licence and acceptance by all parties will be ok. Imagine a tit for tat as no one would want that especially the EU.

Yawn, yawn, double yawn...been done to death by a gazillion people on a gazillion forums.

The people voted - remainers lost - that's democracy, like it or not but that was the result.

I had to renew my EHCI card in the week and ask if any information was available on the BREXIT front
Answer was we are all carrying on as normal and no one to date knows anything :mute

Doesn’t matter how you look at it, there are no benefits for travelling/adventuring around Europe if Brexit happens. There are only negative compromises.......

.........it’s going to make things more complicated and difficult with insurance, travel visa’s, medical cover, customs etc. All for what?....

And that’s the only argument you have because every other argument like the economy, immigration etc has been busted wide open

Please don't cry. It's rather ironic you been blessed with a Union Jack on your Avatar! It needs modding to a blue square with the yellow circle of doom on it... :D

Do you think you're the only one for whom a political vote of any sort in this country did not go the way you wished for the last fifty years?? Happens to us all - you just get on with it and respect the majority. Democracy pees off a lot of people a lot of the time but the alternative is really not good...

I’m not sure what’s happening there then as my avatar is set to something totally different that can not be mistaken for something than a union flag.

Who’s crying? I’m not. But even so that’s quite a condescending remark considering I’ve been rather polite. And I don’t wish this to turn into a brexit slanging match about who voted what.

My views on this post are simple. Brexit will have no benefits to us who tour Europe. It will only bring compromise and complications. And if you disagree then please show me an argument that favours us travellers? Bet you can’t....

This discussion has derailed!
Before EU there was bilateral agreements between all the European countries EFTA members or not. New trade, travel and tourism agreements has to be made and will be made in the future.

Cheers /Christer
ps: one may get upset on alarmist journalism, wee did yesterday, we do now and will do in the future.

And maybe only LHD cars will still be allowed in Europe :(?

Its also worth considering the value of the enormous revenue derived from those British that every day pour under the English Channel and float over it in boats with wallets full and credit cards at the ready. Not sure what percentage it is of the 208 Billion Pounds we spend holidaying abroad a year but I bet with Summer touring & Skiing by car its a very big chunk. Even the Eurocrats are not daft enough to want to lose any of that income especially as they are already about to lose our 13 Billion Pound net membership fees. (Roughly 25% of all tourism related income in EU is from UK holidaymakers) (We also spend twice the number of nights abroad than the average EU-28 Citizen.)

I will try.

If an American (For Instance) travels to France by plane and hires a car and travels through border-less Europe with his US passport he will be treated exactly as a UK Citizen with a UK Passport doing the same with his own car. So no reason to expect any new travel restrictions. However there is the possibility that if the new UK does well post Brexit then the Pound Euro exchange rate may move in our favour. This would give us increased spending power but no further travel restrictions so we may gain - remember WE have to show our passports before entering/leaving Schengan Europe now anyway!.

I know, I know! Just having a bit of fun on a cold wintry day - even seen the odd snowflake about today...

I don't think I've ever got involved in a political discussion on here but could not resist the odd flippant, mischievous, tongue in cheek comment on this one I'm afraid. :)

Hi Gazellio, I was looking for benefits but you haven’t really given anything. All you’ve given is an opinion that at its best gives parity to what we have already. Although discounting other benefits that we’re likely to lose such as the EHIC scheme, higher insurance premiums, potentially having to pay internet roaming fees, lower compensation on any flights, longer processing times at passport control etc etc.

So it’d be nice to have tangible benefits that would perceive travelling to Europe better than the way we do now.

Its certainly not a given that we will lose the EHIC scheme or new equivelent (If we continue to provide similar for EU citizens in UK) , or higher insurance premiums, or potentially having to pay internet roaming fees, or lower compensation on any flights, or longer processing times at passport control (for tourists) etc etc.

My point is that in reality its best for both sides if little changes post Brexit and it my guess that's exactly what will happen. We will CONTINUE to show our passports whether Blue or Red and we will continue to travel freely through the Schengen area. The rest is just speculation EITHER WAY.

I for one unfortunately do not hold the same optimism that we’re going to keep all the perks of being an EU member, when we’re no longer a member.

Perks we may lose EU Citizens in the UK may also lose, especially the EHIC or replacement - that cannot be a one way agreement..

Will Spain (or France) want to discourage UK property buyers or force existing owners to sell?

1.3 million people born in the UK live in other EU countries, according to 2017 estimates from the United Nations (UN). Around 900,000 UK citizens were long-term residents in other EU countries in 2010 and 2011, according to census data across the EU collated by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

That's roughly £190,000,000,000* invested in European Property by long term resident UK Citizens

* assuming that all owned property averaging £150k.
