Is there increasing resistance against EV’s?

And HM Government funneling us all in the direction of mass EV take up. If the government want us to do it then it's almost certainly going to be a bad idea.
Witness Gordon Brown telling us diesel was a clean fuel.

EV just pushes the problems away from the immediate eye. And reduces fumes in cities.

Hydrogen is likely the future. But even that’s not as clean as purported. Most is blue hydrogen from natural gas.

There‘s no apathy here. I’m just unconvinced EV is truly environmentally friendly. Battery recycling - will there be true closed loop recycling?

To be honest, my only true motivation for EV is financial.

@JuanVecino2023, that is my (and many others if they are truly honest with themselves) main motivation for getting an EV. If they pushed the BIK tax up significantly I'd ditch it and go back to the many conveniences of an ICE engine.

Can I ask is it better to charge 15-80% or 15-100%?

I know it takes a long time 80-100 but I’m at home on a 3 pin plug so no time issues. Is it good, bad or neither? I think I thought that with a phone going from 0-100% frequently is good so I was mimicking that.

For some reason, possibly ocd, I like to charge it upto 100% but now my Octopus app has control of my BMW and cheap charging stops at 5.30am it’s often not going to get to 100%, nearer 75%.

You have a Tesla?

Edit: it’s ok I think I have found the answer and set my Octopus App to 80%! Hopefully 10 weeks of me charging it to 100% won’t have done it any real harm! I’ll now aim for 20-80%.
Depends on the Tesla. If LFP battery (so recent RWD) model, then ok to charge to 100% and actually recommended as it helps to balance the batteries. If Long Range or performance version, then better to charge to 80%, albeit you can charge to 100% if there's a long trip coming up. The in car display will tell you what battery and what % it's ok to routinely charge to.

I have a Volvo XC40 EV and the display even recommends for the longevity of the battery to charge to 80% or 90% maximum.

Yes, which is why I was surprised to see what I saw on the ground in terms of EV usage, because over here you could be forgiven for thinking China simply does not care. With such a huge population it's hard to comprehend the scale of China's energy needs. It seems that since the Ukraine war the latest 5 year plan has seen priorities shift from progress towards carbon neutrality back to preservation of energy security - in exactly the same way as here in the UK..

China’s carbon emissions set for structural decline from next year

Covered quite well on More or Less (BBC World Service) recently. China has of course been building coal power stations willy nilly. But renewables capacity has been accelerating really fast and expected to lead to peaking of emissions very soon. Helped also by very rapid switch to EVs in China. I didn't note the figures, but that was the gist.

We have the same cars. Mine says “Volvo recommends charging to 90%” so that’s what I set it to, and I recharge it so it doesn’t drop below 20% after it’s next journey, and that’s usually every couple of weeks.

Their product genius or whatever they're called to me the optimum is between 20% - 80% for maximum battery life but did concede that 90% is more realistic for a decent range.

mine is 20 - 80 for most times. 100% for long journeys. Well, the sun was out today and I was not wasting it so I popped 100% In. I will worry about my electron profligacy in 2032, or however long it is going to take to catch up with me.

Don't understand the science but there must be something in the 20 - 80 thing, I've been doing this for the first time with my latest iPhone and it's now 4 years old and the battery is still in optimum condition even though it gets some really heavy use everyday.

per capita?
View attachment 116301
China and India have a few billion between them.

Per capita makes so much more sense than per country. Why would *anyone* consider comparing national emissions of the US and China without considering the simple fact that China has more than four times the population?

Well done China. Its development of wind and solar power has been both serious and meteoritic.

I remember floating down the River Yangtze on a local passenger ferry between Chongqing and Wuhan, including the stunning Three Gorges, shortly before they became inundated for the world’s largest hydroelectric project. At the time it was claimed that the Three Gorges Dam would generate a third of China’s electricity needs.

How do you set it to stop at 80%??

Utterly useless comparison without population figures.

China’s population 1.4bn
US’s population 330m

China’s population is *four* times larger than the US, yet you consider the carbon emission comparison both fair and reasonable?
Oh sorry! I didn’t mention the US.

I was comparing the India and China lines as they have similar population, but China pollutes 4x as much.

There's a setting on the console where you choose this on the Volvo, I had an EV Mini previously and from memory you could do this from the iPhone app.

Been using this system on an iPhone 12 Mini since I bought it just over 2 years ago. Maximum capacity has reduced down to 86% in that time frame.

The max capacity of my 3 year old iPhone SE is down to 74% :(

I never leave my battery to run flat and I don't stream so battery isn't too stressed. The only time the phone gets a real workout is when i use for navigation in the Cali.
