Is there increasing resistance against EV’s?

I have first-hand proof because this was me with the Audi e-tron at the Nordkapp. It's actually quite easy to drive to the Nordkapp with an EV and many people have already done this. In Norway, there are chargers everywhere. Even in the North, although not that many fast chargers. You just need a bit more time. By the way, this trip with the e-tron was in 2020. In 2021 we took an EV to Iceland and explored larger parts of the remote highlands with this vehicle. With some planning, even this is possible now. In the future, both range of the EVs and charging infrastructure will improve significantly.

Is an EV the right car for every place in the world? Definitey no. Currently, we are traveling for 12 months through Patagonia. Would this trip be possible with an EV? Clearly no.

Will we buy/use another EV for our next trips when we return to Europe? Very likely yes.

And let's face it, filling up an ICE vehicle in Iceland isn't always that easy either. After crossing the eastern interior we came across this fuel station, actually marked on the map. Not much use for our (diesel) Landcruiser though.

“They’re” not saying that, The Sun did! Hunt has now debunked that lie, so it doesn’t bear repeating. HS2 is going to Euston and Manchester. And you will see HS2 trains at Leeds station too, so although they’ll only do 125mph out of Leeds (for now), when they hit the high speed line they’ll accelerate to 220mph so even Leeds/Newcastle will benefit from faster journey times and greater capacity. Boycott The Sun, they are a disgraceful rag, not a newspaper.
Try and imagine the future. We wouldn’t be without HS1 now, but to some it was the biggest scandal this country had sanctioned until opened.
High speed, carbon emission-free travel must be part of our future. Think your grandchildren will want to sit in traffic on the M1/M6 for 4 hours, or get to Manchester in 71 minutes whilst working/ drinking/socialising/sleeping then uber/tram/cycle/train/bus/walk/car club onwards? Many youngsters don’t see the need for a driving licence.
HS2 is an incredible project, Europe’s largest currently, providing tens of thousands of jobs through difficult times and serving our national supply chain, yes with some difficulties in planning and delivery like all massive infrastructure projects, (and inflation isn’t only affecting HS2) but it will free up roads for those who must drive, and classic rail for those who live between the conurbations. Tomorrows chip paper isn’t the font of knowledge for a railway we’ll all rightly be proud of in the end. I’m still hearing calls to scrap it, which tells me some (including that horror clown Nadine Dorries) don’t know how much has already been built, and so what the cost of canning it would be. I’d hazard a guess it would be more than half the cost of delivering it now…

Yes, even with an ICE vehicle you need some planning in the highlands. A couple of years ago we had to return a bit earlier to the ring road as originally planned despite having around 150 liters of diesel in our Nissan Patrol.

Not according to the HS2 Route Map on the HS2 website. It shows Euston.

My understanding is that it will terminate at Euston, but will also stop Old oak common for connections to Elizabeth Line, Heathrow, Great Western Main Line (Wales & SW.), Crossrail etc...all transfers will be at ground level so far quicker & more pratical..so no faffing about with lifts, escalators etc.

I don't give a damn about my cars and campers, it drives my son nuts when her visits and almost begs me to at least give the poor things a clean ..... but then, I've just come back from the gym ...:)

My poor son. I have a plastic lawn, an electric car that I never clean and I spend 5 days a week in the gym at some point. In fact I do everything that according to typecasting a "boomer" should never do....

Poor lad, he must be so ashamed of me. The good news is that I pop some money in a money box for my grandson's when they clean my car :D

A total necessity. The house I bought used to be a clubhouse for a tennis club and had a lawn laid on a thin layer of topsoil dumped over asphalt. Nothing grew. It was either excavate it all or go for a cosmetic solution.

OK ... to be fair - The expedition is also working with industry leaders to adapt existing cutting edge wind and solar technology to charge their all-electric Ariya in the polar regions and turning their campsite into a portable micro-grid.
 
That is how I envisage it working. Some sort of guided lane for pantograph trucks, with trains of them connected by Bluetooth or similar, trundling along at a steady 90 kph, only breaking up and reforming when one or more want to leave the train.

If the overhead power cables are not to run under bridges or through tunnels, trucks temporarily relying on battery power, it does away with any issues of vandals wanting to lob stuff onto the cables.

I really can’t see that automatic lowering or raising of the pantograph to be an issue.

I was riding the Docklands Light Railway today. It must be 30 years old. Everything is fully automated, and while there are occasional issues, it is generally very reliable. I still love sitting at the front and pretending I’m the driver.

If self driving trains were possible when the London Docklands were being developed 30 or 40 years ago, I cannot understand why autonomous pantograph can’t be possible today.
As long as no one else wants to get off the motorway! Ha ha !

10 million people accessing east to west central London travel with a stop at the worlds 4th busiest airport for £15b.
Sounds cheap compared to HS2s £100b plus final build cost.
If rumours are true, final HS2 costs will be in excess of £135b. As one great said recently. “Let that sink in…”
 
OK, I am a sucker when it comes to smooth efficient websites and highly desirable cars…….. recently looked at Tesla …………

NOW I REALLY WANT A TESLA MODEL 3 …….. select, click, buy, collect (in just a few weeks)

A car that is comfortable, fast, can go a long way, has the best charger network, and is one of the safest cars to travel in. And all for less than £43k. It’s a convincing case I have to admit. Now if only I could sleep in it, cook in it, stand up in it, put the grandchildren up in the roof, carry a Porta Potti and two Bromptons, and go away for (say) up to 8 weeks at a time …….. I’d deffo buy one!

Ah well, dreams are dreams I s’pose.

If people ignored all the negative media and test drove one, like you’ve done, then as you say it’s a compelling package.

I’d say the Model Y at £44,990 is an even more compelling but they are both great cars.

Not to mention the 3.9% APR offer.

No I don’t work for Tesla, just on our 3rd one and like to balance things out as they get a lot of bad press.

As I’ve said before it’s really hard for us to go back to a Cali or any ICE car now.

Can’t wait for an affordable EV Camper.

Laggards are not who Teslas care about so I can understand why they don't go down well on here.

We absolutely loved our M3 and MY will be probably be our next, enjoying the BMW I3s atm, lightyears behind on the tech, I mean it's comical how bag German software and UX is, pure s***, but it's a great run around and Anna loves it, and it's nice to hire it out and try to get more cars off the road and enthuse others.

If I had to go German again I'd have a Porsche Taycan, they are actually epic, but then so is the Plaid S, would be a tough choice if I had the cash to make it. It's going to be interesting to watch the GM/Ford, German and Japanese car industry shrink.

Object to being referred to as laggards. We may be behind as a country building the charging points and a great many will never have home charging but time will tell the future of car travel.

It's autonomy and not needing to have so many cars on the road in the first place that will solve so many of the current issues, the laggards are the people who focus on the fuel / drivetrain and how to replace what we see today, not on the the way we will move around in decades to come.
