Isle of Wight - Any ideas?

Planning on doing a few days cycling on the Isle of Wight in early October but camp sites seem to be limited. I am a member of the CC but wondered if anyone has any ideas / views?

We spent a night at Nodes Point in the summer - v.good and intend to go back. Have also been to the one in East Cowes, which is a handy location and site was OK, but Cowes is a not my favourite place.

The Orchards is a nice site with excellent facilities. Not too far from Yarmouth in the middle of the countryside

Save your money on the ferry ( which is more expensive than going to France) as the Isle of Wight looks exactly the same as Hampshire, one of the most boring places I have visited.

I must disagree with your quote. I have lived in Hampshire all my life and visiting the Isle of Wight I am always amazed how different it is crossing that short stretch of water.

Most expensive part of water in the world especially if you use the car ferry from Portsmouth! Go to France instead, that is what I would do

I must disagree with your quote. I have lived in Hampshire all my life and visiting the Isle of Wight I am always amazed how different it is crossing that short stretch of water.

I lived there for three years as part of a construction project, we could not wait to get back to the mainland every weekend, it has a few nice coastal villages but that is it, you would be amazed at the amount of crime on the island, it is not this tranquil place that everyone thinks it is.

Just been looking at the CC website, under the ferry heading, and they are offering a four day break to the IOW including site and ferry crossing for about £150. May be of interest?

The crossing is expensive but great place for a weekend walking or cycling.
The Isle of Wight bus rally is on in October with an amazing network of free bus rides on classic buses linking many of the pubs on the island.
Go over, park up and have fun!

The caravan club are offering the crossing and two very good sites for a good price. Go to Osbourne House and join English Heritage but check you do not go on coach day. All the wrinklies shuffle through the house and then fill the canteen having a cup of tea and a biscuit for three hours before they are picked up. The gardens are amazing, the wrinklies do not go there which is why they fill the canteen. Carisbrooke castle is well worth a visit.Bembridge windmill is amazing. DO NOT use your satnav it will take you along narrow lanes, use a map. We went in June cycled everywhere and had a really good time.

We visited for the first time a couple of years ago and stayed at Carisbrook Castle with English Heritage. It was fabulous having the run of the castle grounds in the evening! We didn't expect much from the island but were absolutely delighted by some of the beaches along the South coast. No clue about campsites but will be looking for one when our California arrives.

We stayed on the Isle of Wight last year at a campsite near shanklin (willowbrook Campsite).
The campsite was fine but the general area was very busy. Roads narrow so not ideal for cycling with cars trying to push past all the time. Ferry was super expensive. Could have got to France for the same price! Should have looked at ferry prices before pre-paying the campsite.

however the West of the island much nicer and quieter & wonderful when you get into the hills. Doubt I’d rush back though due to the ferry prices & the fact that there are places on mainland England that are just as nice

We stayed At Ninham a couple of years ago. Nice toilet block and outdoor pool.

Red Funnel do a combined ferry / camping package - June & July its £360 for 10 nights for a motorhome includes crossings & a pitch with electric. As the ferry would be about £200 on its own its not bad value.

We have stayed here. Yes indeed quirky, but very welcoming and loads of extras to make use of. There is a local town a short walk away and several pubs and restaurants to visit. This is certainly a site we look forward to revisit.
