I've reluctantly come to a decision to replace the AXE 2.5 ltr. engine in my 2005 California due to a cracked head and some cylinder wall scoring. My German-imported van is called a "unicorn" by my mechanic as it is one of only two in British Columbia. VW in their wisdom did not enter these into the North American market so am reliant on sources in UK and EU for parts.
I've sourced an engine builder to supply a properly sleeved and rebuilt an engine, but am now looking for a properly rebuilt GWB 6 spd. manual transmission to swap in at the same time as the engine change. The one builder I sourced on Ebay (24/7 Gearbox Exchange) is reluctant to ship to Canada, despite my using my FEDEX account and assuming all the risks.
One of the items that 24/7 promotes is new synchros and 2nd and reverse gears - items that normally rank high in replacement, but not normally found mentioned by other rebuilders. Does any members have experience with a good gearbox shop they can recommend? Cheers, Thanks, Doug

Good luck with repairing your lovely van .

I thought the VW 2.5 engine was maybe used in the Passat, Phaeton and possibly the 5 litre V10 Touareg was two engines joined together. Are those engines not in USA or Canada? Caravelle?
Surprised you want a manual.

The 5 cylinder R5 engine appeared for only 2 years on USA Touaregs and a few years as the V10. In any case there is no one in NA doing engine rebuilds on them. The Phaeton was never a success and was pretty well a gas engine model.
The van came as a manual and I couldn't imagine anyone able to convert one to auto, given the hardware and electronics involved. There are 3 or 4 T5s in the province and one Multivan.
