Battery is 5.5 yr years old from new, (recently predominantly short journeys) and down to 80% (as tested by a VW specialist) capacity. As a result the Stop / Start function has stopped working. Is this normal? Can anyone advise a good replacement battery? I've been quoted £298.86 for a Yuasa with 5 yr glee. And £175 for a Platinum with 3 yr glee from Kwik Fit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As you have Stop/Start it is not just a simple job of replacing the battery for one of your choice.
A replacement battery has to be Coded to the Vehicle for the correct function of the Smart Alternator and the Blue Motion functions of Regenerative Braking etc: and must be able to support these functions.

VW fit Varta batteries and the Varta F21 is a like for like replacement.

I would try to replace it with whatever the Original one is.

Probably won't need recoding if you replce with like for like.
From my reading of the situation when I changed mine, if like for like the system still has to be coded that a new battery is in place. The overall coding is less but is still required as the BlueMotion system adjusts to a deteriorating battery and just inserting a new like for like battery can shorten its life.

But if its only down to 80% is it not worth sticking
a CTEK charger on it and seeing if can hold a full charge?

Well I can only go on when I changed ours. Like for like, although it was a Bosch which is the same as Varta but longer warranty, swapped the battery straight over and everything worked perfectly.
When I checked it using VCDS the coding didn't even match what the original Varta coding should have been so I concluded it's a bit of red herring. I did put in the correct coding though to match the new battery just to keep everything correct.

Was your old serial number 1111111111?

Hi, what does VCDS stand for?

Hi, what does VCDS stand for?
VCDS (an abbreviation for "VAG-COM Diagnostic System" and formerly known as VAG-COM) is a Microsoft Windows-based software package, developed and produced by Ross-Tech, LLC since May 2000. It is primarily used for diagnostics and adjustments in the automotive industry.

A few club members have VCDS units so you could ask if any are local to you, if not your local garage should be able to recode your new battery for a few drinks ;)

Apparantly it’s not the coding relating to what battery was or is fitted, it’s just triggering the vehicle to start a new learning cycle for the new battery. This function can just be triggered by altering the serial number by 1, or altering any of the other information. That is exactly what you did. The replacement battery will work, but without triggering the “ Learning “ function may not act as efficiently as it can or for as long.
