is there some bizarre local law that prevents campsites in The New Forest from providing toilets/showers?

It seems there is no shortage of sites but too many without facilities?

Probably provision of Sewage Services infrastructure. They probably use Septic Tanks.

Planning permission laws in National Parks can begora things like that.
Is it a National Park? Is it a ANOB (area of natural outstanding beauty or whatever they are called)?

It is now a National Park but most of the stringent controls on development date from the 19th century.
Sandy Balls near Fordingbridge have been doing terrific midweek rates recently and is a place well worth a visit, has full compliment of facilities including indoor swimming pool etc.

A bit south of Sandy Balls is the Red Shoot inn and camping. They have a toilet block.

Years ago we camped in the New forest in some of the Forestry sites - if you thought people where out of control re dog mess this site was a no go area on the Tree line for human C@$% :Nailbiting but that was some years ago. I expect lack of mains sewage is why the sites in the actual forest do not have facilities. Sea Water Lido at Lymington has showers but cold in winter.

Sandy Balls in the winter is a bargain, last week, hard standing, electric, water and use of the pool £15 for 2 of us.
They do get booked up at weekends and are restricted to the number of pitches they are allowed to use but that does make it relatively quiet.

Hollands Wood is one of the few "camping in the forest" sites that have full ablution facilities. No hook ups but we like that for a few days - keeps the caravans away!

Sandy Balls has their own sewerage system which may explain their situation.

The new forest is a protected national park. Many of the campsites in the heart of the forest have no facilities. If you have a porta loo then you are allowed to camp. No loo, no entry, take note. These sites are often secluded and very quiet and you will see lots of wildlife.

Sandy balls is on the edge of the forest and in a less popular side of the A31, but none the less still pretty.

Hollands wood is a nice site. Walking distance to pubs and restaurants and Brickenhurst village but at the same time in the heart of the forest.

The Pig restaurant in Brockenhurst is fantastic if you fancy a treat and is walking distance from site (maybe not in dark as you have to go across a field).

Also, don't forget the new forest has a coast!!

Park at beaulieu and walk to bucklers hard, or another nice option in spring / summer is to park at Keyhaven and get the little boat to Hurst Castle which has fantastic views of the isle of wight.

Burnbake has those facilities yet is still relatively natural and more like parking in a clearing in the woods. :) There is a big camping field but we liked the wooded area.

Unfortunately Burnbake is not in the New Forest but is in the Isle of Purbecks. However, living close to both, I would recommend both areas equally. Plenty to do, forests, sea, picture postcard villages.

WE made good use of our National Trust membership around there. Corfe castle also nearby I seem to recall?
