On the verge of purchasing an Ocean. We’re thinking of opting for the Discover Media Pro navigation system but we’re not sure really what extra we’ll get. Worth it? We’re VERY untechnical so bit worried about any upgrading of software (eg maps) we may need to do. Thoughts?!

Also, any thoughts on tyres eg 235/55/17 or 215/60/17?

Dealer asked if we wanted mudflaps…. I don’t know! Do we?!

Random questions but hoping someone ‘out there’ can help as this is such a helpful forum…. Thanks

I don't know about the option and what it offers. I was put off most of the options for my Coast as I am very tight. I use Google maps on my phone displayed on the van screen using the connect facility and I've been very happy with it.

Google maps works well for us - didn’t bother with the VW satnav!

Android Auto in my Coast. That way its always as up to date as possible.

I think I remember that the option costs about 720£. TomTom is £29 per year for „family „ subscription (I.e up to five devices). This loads onto your phone and can be played through the appleplay or android connect. You update the maps easily on your home broadbandconnection, and have live traffic wit it.

I’m also happy with Apple Car play/Google maps on the standard screen. I went for lots of options on a Coast (including mud flaps) but regretted not getting LED headlights. I think these however are standard on an Ocean. Recently borrowed an Ocean that had blind spot indicators - if these aren’t standard then I’d go for them.

It’s worth it for the resale cost.
The DMP, removes the two big nobs either side of the screen for a more streamlined look.
I’m pretty sure it gives you the digital cockpit too, so you can display Waze / Google maps on the big screen, and have VW maps in the middle.
It’s a bigger screen too.

235/55 tyres will be a better ride IMHO
I have the 255/45/18 palmerstons and it rides lovely on them.

If you can install mudflaps yourself, get them from eBay for £35.
If you can’t fit them, get them on the configurator.

Also get the wooden floor look.
Much better than the van type knobbly floor.

Any other options you were thinking about ?

+1 for the wooden floor. Everyone who looks in ours comments on it. Would order it again and again.

Thanks so much. We're good with the other options we've chosen.

We'll go with 235 tyres I think, still not sure on the mudflaps (need them?) and the Navigation System is still our sticking point. Our concern is we're not very techie and I read a thread which confused the heck out of me with users talking about updating software - it was way over my head!

No need to manually update Sw.
It does it all via wifi whilst the Cali is at your house.
Go into the settings and connect it to your home wifi.
If no wifi available it will download the updates on its own sim (e-sim ?) which you don’t pay for.
It’s all built in now.
So no stress.
I’d go for mud-flaps.
The less crud and stones flicked up the side is a win - win….

The factory fit mud flaps are different to dealer fit or retro/diy fit. So you might want to check out the images of the different types. The factory fit ones are secured differently and are not an easy retro fir, even by the dealer. So if you don't add them at this stage you will have to choose from dealer fit or a DIY option. I didn't choose them, as I thought the price was a little steep and opted to fit my own. (And I'd do the same again). Just trying to point out that the ones you can fit later are different to the factory fit option.

I’d go for the upgraded media system Discover Media Pro. We hired 2 vans before buying ours, one with the standard system and the other with the upgraded. For us the upgrade was definitely worthwhile given the display options and larger screen.

Can’t guide on the tyre choice sorry, we have 18”

Factory fit mudflaps ? Yes - they’re well fitted and substantial. Saves stone chips. Some don’t like the look, we do.

Wood floor is easy to keep clean, more so than the standard rubberised one (we’ve experienced both).

Fantastic! Thank you so much. That's great to hear as you've had experience of both media systems to know the difference.

Really appreciate everyone else's responses too - thank you very much.

This is what the DMP gets you - the main thing (for us) is the bigger screen and no buttons. My sister got the one below and wishes she had the bigger screen. For the online stuff, fine, but have never used it. It updates in the background so don't worry about maps, but like most of us just use CarPlay or the android equivilenet. We used Waze for nav.

Tyres - we have the 235 18's - love them.

Dealer mudflaps are a rip off - buy your own and fit them. We have a front and rear set that are fitted and were only 30 quid.

+1 for wood floor - it's easier to keep clean and changes the look of the van more than you think.

So does Waze and Google - why not save yourself the 30 quid a year?

I actually like analog knobs but I'm of a certain generation. I find the Waze via iphone works great for me for navigation.

Def go for wood effect floor. Lost count of the number of times I dropped something heavy on it and not a mark. Super easy to keep clean. My concern with the rubber is that it could degrade over time and pick up a tacky character.

Towbar or even just the prep is a good investment.

The Coast Edition I had included most of the options like LEDs and interior lighting.

The only box I wish I checked was rear double glazing.
