So we are off to France for 3 weeks and have a 6.1 Cali with no spare wheel. Looking at the RAC website they are doing Comprehensive Plus breakdown cover for £123 zone 1 which seems very good but what are people doing about tyres ??????

Unless you have 18 inch wheels, the simplest solution is to buy the carrier, bolts and a cheap steel wheel and get a basic tyre fitted locally to you before you go. You might get lucky and find the whole set on eBay or someone selling a spare with tyre already on.

If you do have 18 inch wheels then you need to choose a smaller diameter wheel but deeper sidewall in order for it to fit the carrier. Edited to add: Be mindful of the overall circumference of the spare tyre needs to match the other 3 to within a fairly close tolerance.

No idea why you don’t have a spare but, never leave home without one of these.

At best it’ll be fine for the remainder of your trip, at worst you could limp to the nearest tyre shop.

You can buy VW Assistance, which covers Europe etc for £120/Yr.

You can add full annual UK/euro breakdown cover to your car insurance policy for less than £100; check with your insurer as can probably be added retrospectively.

Spare is essential as will get you back on the road a lot quicker. Does the van have the cradle?

It always puzzled me why people would pay an extra 90 for a spare wheel. To retro fit it's about 150 for the holder and about 70 for the jack plus cost of the wheel.

Ours did not have one and we were casual about it just carrying a Holts Tyreweld. That was until we had a puncture when up in the lakes.

The Tyreweld worked fine and got us home 300 miles away but decided to sort it out.

Ended up with a hanger and spare from Ebay, cost about 220 all together. We have 18” alloys but if you get the right spare it’s a non issue.

We then got a slow puncture on our last jaunt, so was able to get it sorted on the way at a garage, but happy to have the peace of mind.

Seems, to my eyes, the 18’s are very puncture prone and unlike my other car, not self sealing tyres.

Yes we have 18 one the van, but have only seen 16” spares

Puncture is manageable with tyre foam but a blow out and you’re screwed without a spare.

Tyreweld wouldn't have sorted out this blowout we had in Scotland a few years ago - glad we had a spare wheel.

Another aspect of our blowout was, we'd have had a job getting the wheel off, especially on the hard shoulder of the motorway. The breakdown rescue guy parked his truck behind and used a bigger jack, and had to whack the wheel off with a sledgehammer. More difficult than on a car, that's for sure.
