Hi,

I've never had one of these but it is annoying when you get loads of dirt and grass inside the van (especially if parked on grass). On holiday in the summer I noticed some of the "Big Whites" had a sort of carpet outside under their roll out awning, they look like they are pretty heavy duty and I wondered what peoples thoughts were on one for a Cali. By the way we don't have a drive away awning etc. so would be for outdoor use only, I'm guessing that they allow water to drain through but am imagining they get pretty wet and dirty and perhaps heavy as well as taking up loads of space.

Can anyone help with a view on whether they are worth it and if so any brand/size, version recommendations?

Thanks

I just have a decent rubber door mat and take my outdoor shoes off when inside and wear sliders. You have to remember that a carpet will take up storage space. In a Great White this is not as much of an issue. Less is more in a campervan!

I have the outdoor revolution from the club shop. Its a similar size to the wind out awning and packs away into its original packet which is only about 5cm deep so fits in loads of gaps.

We have 2 kids and it does deal with most of the dust and sand which goes straight through. We then have a door matt as the last point of entry to the van. I would say it doesn't drain water off as well as you'd expect but I do like having it

Looks like a very good solution. What sort of size would you say it is when folded-up?
(We use a 2.2m square tarpaulin. It folds up to something like a newspaper folded in half which is great, but it holds the water when it rains.)

We use an outdoor rug from B&Q (it was about 30 quid) it’s waterproof in the sense that it doesn’t absorb water.

It provides a welcome matted area under our awning that allows us to step in/out and put shoes on/off etc on the way into / out of the Cali.

Keeps sand, grass & mud to a minimum.

Rolls up and fits under the bench seat down the passenger side (next to the fridge).

For short stays without an awning, we have a rug sized mat made out of old milk bottles from Weaver Green. It goes in an old nylon gear bag when in the boot, and you can hose it when dirty. For bigger stays using our larger drive away tent, we use a breathable membrane carpet at the porch, about 3m x 3m, which folds into a carry bag. Again you can hose this.

Probably similar, 30x20x5cm.

We’ve tried a few different types, settled on the ‘outdoor rug’ plastic weave type which you can get from B&Q etc. They are ideal and breath/let water through so you don’t end up with a puddle or muddy and wet underneath in a morning, like you get with a tarp or a rubber mat. Added benefit of being pretty cheap. Really useful especially with dogs.

We have one of these with VW logo on
Highly recommended, had it for years and so easy to hose down and store

We just have one of those plastic doormats that looks like grass, & inside the van we have a dark grey bobbly bath mat (Ikea). Both can be easily shaken out.

I'm good for inside the van (have a washable rubber backed mat), its just outside, its a shame @Brindisi, I cant seem to see the VW Logo one you are referring to, perhaps they have stopped doing it, don't suppose you know a rough size or have any images? Thanks

We find it good to use one on surfaces when it’s hard to avoid treading sand etc into the van. About the same footprint as the wind-out awning, cut out from a bigger porous sheet from B&Q or similar. Folds up inside one of the folding chairs in the tailgate or in that space when the chairs are in use. Our water hose travels in a bag inside the other folding chair. We also have a proper door-mat that always sits outside the door when on a pitch and travels on the floor in front of the rear seat.

We buy the cheapest pound shop type doormats leave them outside under the awning & treat them as disposable.
