We came down to Portsmouth last night for some early morning fishing on the boat today.

When we got off the main roads, there was a strange noise at lower speeds. I initially thought it was gearbox noise but then noted the whine was worse manoeuvring and checked the power steering reservoir - almost empty. Under the drivers side suspension, lots of fluid.

I can’t see where it’s coming from and am having to leave the van here and get collected. There’s a general motor mechanic 100yds away I’m going to call tomorrow. Any thoughts on what it might be and likely £££?

Hopefully it’s that then. Or a cracked pipe.

The pump is visible from underneath, driver side , just inside the engine bay , low down (approximately middle of the wheel arch ) , if it is leaking it will be obvious, (given the loss of fluid) if not look to the steering rack gator.

Put the steering lock to lock, the noise will be a high pitched whine !

I’m not with the van anymore, I needed to get home. I’m at the mercy of a local mechanics.

Thanks for the advice, I can use that when I speak to them.

Fortunately local mechs won't use VWs Labour rates !

All resolved now. It was a fracture in the metal end of the high pressure hose by all accounts. Luckily no pump damage but still quite a pricey surprise.
