Rear tailgate handle paintwork deteriorating

Has anyone else had issues with discoloured and 'spotted' paintwork on the rear tailgate handle ? I had the handle replaced under warranty on my 60 plate Cali about 12-18 months ago and now it's happened again.

My local VW bodyshop ( Specialist Cars, Kirkcaldy) haven't seen this before but are raising this with VW. I'm keen to have a permanent fix this time rather than go round the same loop again.

The paintwork on the aluminium handle isn't corroded/bubbling or flaking off, just discolouring (turning black). The surrounding tailgate paintwork is absolutely fine. Anyone else seen this ??

Mine was replaced under warranty.

Same problem.

Yes - I have this on my 2012 Csli. SMG have seen it and it needs to be booked in for a warranty repair.

Mine also replaced under warranty.

So has the issue reoccurred since you had the handle replaced ? Mine has developed the same paint fault only a year after being replaced.

Sorry no mine was replaced first time recently. Not heard of the problem re-occurring. Not a good omen !

This appears to be just starting on ours....on the top edge and a few spots in the grip. Hopefully it will be accepted alongside the main roof corrosion which is about to be inspected and all three jobs can be done by Heritage (third is front roof panel which is already DISSed)

Mine was on the grip surround only.

Just a thouhgt , could it be that your dealer did not replaced it but repainted it...
If so and theres a problem with the way the finisch paint seals the groundpaint or the plastic than the problem just comes back afther a while....
Could be ....no ?

Yep, happened to ours too, noticed it after about 12 months.
Looked exactly like the photo someone else posted.
Dealer said they fitted a new one which they had painted themselves ( presumably in their paint shop and not with a spray can on the forecourt :crazy )
Still looks ok about 6 months on.

It's the sort of thing you don't mind too much when covered by warranty, but will be a pain if it happens outside of it.

I was told they fitted a new one they had resprayed - I guess I have to take them at their word.

They've now come back to say that having consulted VW there isn't an authorised fix. But with the growing number of people encountering this issue I'm wondering whether it's only a matter of time ...

The first replacement handle was covered by a (I think) 2 year warranty so although my Cali is now out of warranty the handle is still covered. Just as well really as I'm now just about to get it booked in for a second replacement ! I wonder how many times I'll go around this loop ?! Crazy.
