Replace pads and discs costs

Hi all. My Cali Coast is coming up to three years old and has done over 56k miles with no problems. Mot review says front pads and rear pads and disks worn 85%, so will need replacing at 60k service in a few months. VW dealer quote is inc VAT around £470 each for front and back ie £940 total. I want to keep using VW dealer, as van is not paid until 01/25 and it's a long term vehicle to keep until I have to stop driving. Happy to pay this if cost seems about right, but wanted to check. The dealer service there so far has been 100% in all respects. Ta.

Is there a local VW independent place near you? Could fit guenuine parts, but labour probably cheaper!

I’d have no problems to ask an independent to fit VW parts and be okay with PCP requirements, especially if the regular services are done at a dealer.

On our Volvo recently, Volvo dealership price estimate £500 for front and rear pads (no discs); independent changed rear pads for £170 and said fronts are good for another 9k. All discs are okay. What really got my goat was that Volvo wouldn’t even give a fixed price, and the service guy said it could well be more. They’d just serviced the car so could see everything!

Brakes are a wearable item, there is no warranty on brakes & therefore no consequence to using non VW branded parts (vw don’t make brakes)
there is no requirement to have VW part numbered components fitted by a dealer, unless you want to pay more for the material & Labour.

Kwik Fit, ATS, Halfords etc, loads of tyre fitting depots will supply and fit brakes at a fraction of the cost of a VW dealer. They’ll even come to you, for a price of course.

No different to getting tyre change. Not sure anyone would have that done at a Stealership......unless they price matched.

I paid a specialist just under £300 for rear pads /discs last Aug.

Been looking for a full set for our Tiguan and was quotes anywhere between 560 and 1200 for all four. We used RAC to the door in the end. 560 all in. It’s 4 years old and we have extended warranty. I’d have done myself but CBA with the electronic handbrake.

Some mention you can change, stay in warranty etc. That is strictly true as long as VW can’t prove having the work done broke something else that you later claim for.

Unlikely, but worth bearing in mind.

If you want peace of mind. “Genuine parts”. Dealer records. Etc. the dealer price IMO is not that wild. It will be about 300 more but that is in line with anything main dealer related.

I’d love to see the warranty wording on brake Pads,

I would presume it would relate to abnormal wear or disintegration of a pad compared to others, likewise abnormal wear on 1 disk, likewise any failure relating to the fitting . All unlikely but possible.

Or cracked rotors due to casting failures.

Worth mentioning as well that all though not all brake pads are equal, they do all have to comply with the EU ECE R90 rule in terms of performance compared to OE.

Also, depending on the classification of a Cali as a Light or Commercial vehicle, if the OE discs were type approved after November 2016 or November 2014 respectively, then any non OE replacements also have to conform to the OE specifications under ECE R90.2 legislation.

So if reputable branded non OE replacement pads and discs are used you should have some reassurance that they will be fit for purpose.

That's it. Normally have a California in the showroom along with all the cars. Operate an iDBuzz as the courtesy taxi into Hereford town centre and pickup, so I make a day of it.

Crumbs......glad I'm handy with the spanners. Changed my rears just after Christmas. My VW discs didn't last so all Brembo now

Textar brake pads and rotors are as good or even better than VW OEM. Buy them from say Auto Doc save a fortune over OEM versions and get a local garage to fit at a fraction of the labour cost of a main dealer. Nothing special about fitting pad and rotors.
