Has anyone had a 3rd rail retrofitted to their T6.1 California Ocean? I believe Exploria in West Yorkshire can do it, but does anyone else?

Check out this thread. No difference between the 6 and the 6.1 in the passenger area.

Thank you. Has anyone done this and what are the ins and outs of the paperwork?

There is no additional paperwork fitting a 3rd rail as it is a factory fit option.
However, if you are to fit a 5 th seat then you must complete the change form on your V5c registration document to increase seat numbers from 4 to 5. Once again this is a factory fit option so no problem.
Lastly, inform Insurance company.

NB. This cannot be done on the 4Motion because of weight problems.

Thank you. Makes sense. Just need to find somewhere localish that will do this.

Can’t help you there I’m afraid. The only suggestion I have is Kernow Transporters in Cornwall. Well thought of and fit lots of California items to Transporters, beds, roofs etc.

On the topic of a 5th seat. Is it possible (if you don’t have the third rail) to install a 2 seat bench in lieu of the passenger swivel chair on a 6.1 Cali? I’m sure it is given most conversions have them - but wondered if anything about the California makes it harder / less desirable.

Less desirable for sure because you're blocking access from front to rear and lose the ability to swivel the driver's seat.

No chance at all, the bench is too deep to give any leg room, access to the rear unless the front bench is touching the back of the front seats is almost impossible. The view from the rear bench is appalling.
I looked into it in detail when we had 4 kids at home. As we had the 3rd rail we ended up putting two 5th seats in. Other alternative is to swap the front passenger captains chair for a standard van double front.

7 Seater California Beach fulfills all the above criteria!

Updating the story. Just back from Penzance where the incredible team at Kernow Transporters fitted a third rail to my T6.1 Cali in only a few hours. Also Denise at Jackyards made a matching seat cover for the 5th seat I sourced on eBay. There is a bolt in the passenger side rail behind the bench seat that I removed so it can slide further back and give more legroom when the 5th seat is in.

Makes a huge difference to the versatility of the Cali and if there is five of us we don't need to cram into our T-Cross
