Good Morning All.
First time posting , My Wife and I have a 2016 California Ocean ,we have owned the van now for 5 years , it's been regular serviced , and never encountered any problems.
Last November I decided to purchase new LED front headlamp units also rear light units , they were professionally installed, It was barely 2 weeks after the lights were fitted , an alarm was sounding in the van.
I now realise its related to the roof, I only discovered a few week ago while attempting to raise the roof , nothing happened.
Whereas before you could here a motor running when pressing the control panel, Nothing now happens.
Now at a loss , I decided to take the van to a VW garage to investigate further , they reported back that the fault code 7001 was appearing on the testing.
Unfortunately they were not familiar with VW California's only commercial VW vans.
I contacted the chap again who installed the lights , explained the fault code , he called carried out a few tests like disconnected the lights ,tried to reset the control panel , but unfortunately not successful.
With the roof firmly closed , despite the control panel stating roof open , also the alarm going off intermittently while driving, I am desperate to get the roof sorted.
The light units were purchased from Transporter HQ , along with Canbus fittings for the fog lights.
Any advice on the above would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks.
BrenC.

Try Roof/Heater or Fridge

Hi Welsh Gas.
Thank you for the prompt reply , I believe they tried the items you mentioned above , however I will try them myself.
Both the fridge and the heater are working correctly.
I am hoping to get an auto electrician to check over the van , and see if he is able to pin point the problem , I wondered if the new LED lights were the problem , because no issues existed before they were installed.
If anyone has access to wiring diagrams that they could share, it may help.
Thanks in advance.

While close in time, it is possible there is no correlation at all between the two. Could it be roof sensors? When you say alarm, do you mean control panel codes or actual car alarm?

  • Agree
Reactions: Sad
Hello Dave
The noise is exactly the same sound as when the roof is going up , more a pinging noise than an alarm sound, however its pinging at intervals while driving.
Is it possible to raise the roof without removing all the roof lining , so I can access the roof sensors.
Any more advice is welcome.
Thank You.

Fault code 7001 means a power outage, probably when they fitted your lights, try removing the control panel fuse under the passenger seat, wait 10 seconds then plug the fuse back in (see pic). This should reset the control panel and then check if the error 7001 has gone, if not delete it and try raising your roof.

Hi Welsh Gas.
Unable to turn control panel off , when I press the lower left switch nothing happens , it still displays Roof Open !
Also tried to clear fault code by pressing bottom right switch , again nothing happens.
I am able to access the VW diagnose , but unable to clear fault code 1000 now displayed.
But Fridge & Heater are working , still trying to figure out why the roof will not operate.

As I said previously, try removing and replacing the control panel fuse.

Update on Roof fault.
After 4 hours spent with an Auto electrician this morning.
Still no joy , tried all of the suggestions mentioned in previous posts.
Now considering taking it to a VW specialist repair centre who would be able to sort it.
If anyone could recommend a Garage in the Midlands area that would help.
Thanks you all for your input to date.

Ok but first contact Mark @volksvans on this forum as he's a specialist in repairing Cali roof issue etc. He's based in Matlock Derbyshire. See his Facebook reviews ...

When the roof sensors go you get code 1000 and you can no longer turn off the control panel. The bonging will happen when driving.

Or you could go to the best place to fix them in Cornwall. I think they are called Kernow Transporters. Lots of people have used them to fix the roof.

Getting it open is your first problem. On today’s forum there is a similar issue https://vwcaliforniaclub.com/threads/electric-roof-problem.57206/
