Roof repair quote sense check

I think I would have searched for someone to convert the roof to a manual version.
Put this hideous electric roof system to bed, once and for all...

How unreliable is the roof though? In the years I've been on here there have only been literally a handful of people that have had the actual mechanism fail.
If there had been hundreds there would have been specialists offering conversions & pump refurbishments etc by now.
There always used to be control panel failures with the Knob breaking, theres a new panel now shared with the coast models that no doubt will introduce its own problems.

For me, I view the risk of the roof failing as minimal. That doesn't stop me feeling sorry for those that have experienced it & then are at the mercy of the main dealers.

True, i agree with you there Andy.
We've seen very few cases on the forum over the years.

The downside are stories like this, where the dealer (apparent specialist) has replaced numerous parts at a cost of £3.5k. As someone else above mentioned, Its un-lightly that so many parts failed at the same point.

Isn't it strange a forum member has fixed his roof with a £30 BMW part. Yet going to the dealers has cost the O/P thousands...

Thanks for the update O/P really appreciate the feed back and conclusion to the story. I'm glad your fixed and can once again enjoy the van, hopefully for many years to come:thumb

Re Roof issues i have had exactly the same issues.Roof only opening intermittently, and then stopped working all together (fault 1000 that would not reset). after reading loads of threads about roof issues came to the conclusion that the most common fault is that one of the four sensors on the hydraulic rams that lift and lower roof may have failed.
Although no visual signs of deteriation i had all four sensors changed by a qualified electrician. The problem was solved so i agree aquire sensors (called Hall switches) from BMW Easy to get not to expensive easy to get to quite simple job.

Hope this helps Bob

It does often seem to be the sensor rather than the mechanical part. Electronics seem to fail more often than VW mechanicals. I have a 2008 California bought in 2009 and a 2008 Golf GTI bought new and I’ve had very few mechanical issues.
I think my DPF sensor cost £20 and VCDS lite to adapt was free. I can’t imagine how many mechanics would have fleeced me on that.
