SAT NAV keyboard issues - letter H won’t work

Hi. I have a 2016 T6 Ocean. The sat nav works fine except that I can’t select the letter H on the keyboard. Pressing H returns a J, a G or nothing. Consequently, I can navigate to Jaywards Jeath or Gemel Gempstead. Any address or postcode containing an H is impossible. Has anyone else encountered this problem and maybe found a solution?

I have tried a factory reset of the sat nav.

That sounds like the touch sensor is gone and would require a replacement unit. If you have the extended 5 year warranty then you could still claim under that I would guess?

Try using a pointing device (end of a biro) and see if you can get the H to register using that. Obviously not the ink end!! You want the contact patch on the screen to be something smaller than the end of your finger.

In simple terms, most touch screens have a matrix of capacitors that record a change in their charge when touched. If some of these capacitors have stopped working, it’s either a new screen (fine for a phone, but unlikely for a car unit) or a replacement I’m afriad.

It’s possible some dirt or other things can impact performance, but I’d guess you would see this.

As a work around, is there a way to navigate around the input screen uses the rotary knob, a bit like in the old days, or today with a smart tv?

Thanks. Unfortunately, no extended warranty. I will try your biro method. For the mean time, it’s Google Maps on app connect.
It looks like I will need a replacement unit. I did try carefully cleaning the surface but without success. I also contacted my van centre but they have not seen this problem before.

Could give Hazzydayz a ring? They can sort out most VW units eg:

I have just had exactly the same issue. Letters I and M cannot be selected on both Sat Nav and phone. I have had VW look at it and they told me a new head unit is required (£2100)!
Thankfully I do have the extended warranty as this is a ridiculous amount of money.

I’m originally from London and have this annoying trait of dropping all the H’s off of the front of my words like Otel and orrible. I found I have managed to get through life with this affliction to my speech.
It could have been worse for you and it could have been the letter F. Ancy never being able to tell anyone to eff off.. to many f’s me thinks there

So far, I have been getting by without the sat nav, using Google instead. At £2100, I’m likely to continue that way but my van centre have asked me to drop in next time I’m passing so it’s possible they might suggest a fix.

Okay. This problem has progressed and it’s becoming clear that the problem is the touch screen. The maps now ‘jump around’ and change scale randomly, the unit telephones people at random, app connect cant be accessed, etc.
I have Tried other forums and got many jokey replies but nothing concrete. I have looked into getting a repair and I’ve looked at replacements. The VW replacement comes up at £1500 which seems excessive and there are some after market replacements. I really don’t have the cash to buy a replacement but if it comes to it, I want something that allows me to avoid narrow roads and tight corners as I frequently tow big trailers. Any solid advice or information would be useful.

Can recommend the below, approx £700 whe combined with a Kenwood VW interface lead (for climate, reverse sensors, heated seats etc) + Vw Fascia trim; Very easy to fit:

KENWOOD DMX8019DABS

Satnav is mirrored wirelessly to the head unit over your phone using Google Maps or Waze, (but unsure regarding trailer settings / routing).Waze is great for satnav as even warns you about potholes!

Contact Absolut5, they are very helpful.

Thanks for the info. I’ll look into this. VW offer a Kenwood unit that does all the business but I really can afford it and I can think of much better things I could do with £1600. The unit you have suggested sounds a bit more affordable.
I did wonder if it might be possible to get the broken unit repaired.

Did you phone Hazzydayz?

Not yet. Lockdown got in the way and van was out of use from October through to April. thanks for reminding me.

I’d be surprised if repair made any economic sense. Small market and specialised parts mean the costs are high compared to some of the cheap Chinese units you can buy brand new.

You’d either need a donor unit or just buy a second hand one from an auction site.

I installed this into my 2012 MX5. It replaced the Byzantine (age and complexity) 'stereo'. It has a double DIN face and single DIN back. Not sure what flavours of California it might fit or what bezels are available. At £340 I think it's great value.

It was an easy fit and it works perfectly with Android Auto.

That looks really useful, particularly at the price. The Amazon listing doesn’t give much information and I would need to know it has inputs for reversing camera, parking sensors, etc. With CarPlay, I could also use Google maps and stream a bit of music.

You’re right. A repair is likely to cost in the region of £500. Mind you, a replacement is about £1500.

If you want a plug & play unit contact these guys. Very helpful and what they don't know is not worth knowing.

It does have a reversing camera input although I do not need this so much on the MX5! I'm not sure about parking sensors, but the spec implies that it does.

This thread reveals that others on this forum have fitted this model. May be worth messaging them for VW related detail.

I have been looking at the Kenwood DNX451RVS but I can’t find any detailed specifications.
Researching the web reveals that many people experience problems with the Discovery Media touch screen. It seems to be a widespread problem.
