In response to the thread saying this section is under used, I would like to recommend Shell Island. It's in North Wales, between Harlech and Barmouth.

To be honest, the shower and toilet facilities are not top notch, but it is vast and varied. It is reputed to be the largest camping area in Europe. You can camp in the woods, on grassy fields, next to the harbour, by the pub and facilities or in the middle of nowhere; and no one is allowed to camp within 20m of you (unless you are in a group by mutual agreement).

There is a pub, restaurant and cafe on site as well as a supermarket, camping shop and gift shop. However, despite this, it is not commercialised and it has a quaint, amateurish feel to it.

The sunsets are fantastic and the location is ideal for exploring the area. You are supposed to spend the night under canvas (caravans are prohibited) but this is not enforced. Ideal place for a get together.

Forgot to say, look out for the dolphins in the bay. ~ And the nudists a bit further along the beach :D

Great informative review Colin, thanks. :thumb

Unless it's changed you have to watch the access as it's only available depending on the tides. In emergencies they will allow you to use the airfield access though. Great spot though.

No, it's still the same. The wait depends on the height of the tides, some days it doesn't close at all. It's great sitting out with a pint on a summer's evening watching the road being covered over! Not so good if you're waiting to get on the island though ...

Get the nets out to go crabbing as the causway gets covered at the highest tides. Great fun :)

The central shower block had been updated when I last went and is now excellent, one of the best we have used.

Thats good news, some of our family go there several times a year, I'm yet to try it but can't wait to.
