Sliding door handle failure

Has anyone had problems with their sliding door internal door release handle? Mine stopped working the other night, just before turning in and now flaps about and won't open the door. You can still lock the door and open it using the outside handle.

I am planning to attempt to fix the problem, so any advice gratefully received.
