After owning my VW California less than two months it has sustained a significant chip to the windscreen at the lower left portion of the windscreen. I have spoken to my insurers Aviva, who have instructed national windscreen to look at this on Tuesday 2 days from now. I am hopeful it can be repaired as the chip is less than 40mm diameter at the moment. However if the windscreen needed replacement is it ok to have this done by a national windscreen company or does this need to be done at a main dealer to preserve manufacturers warranty. A windscreen will have connections for heated windscreen, rain sensors and so is not as simple as in the past. Has anyone else had to deal with damaged windscreen and have experience of best way of going about repair. I am due to set off for outer Hebrides on 11th November and so I need this dealt with rapidly. Any thought gratefully received ?

Hi having a new windscreen fitted will make no difference to your warranty vw would call in someone like national windscreens or autoglass to fit it anyway as its a specialist job.

Thanks I thought that might be the case. Just that when you read the manual it doesn’t make that clear. Just the usual warnings etc.

Is that a typo? I thought the cut off for repairs was about 10mm

We had a 25mm "star" chip repaired on our previous van and it was almost invisible. The operation of the heated screen was unaffected.

The repair chap said that he would always attempt to repair a chip before replacing a screen. I'm guessing there are limits to this but it probably saves the insurers a load of money when they are successful.

40mm does sound like a whopper though.

40mm max but less if in line of sight or wiper swept area.

Usually they spread overnight especially in cold/frosty weather

They fit the screens fine , better than a dealer but sometimes fit pattern windscreens which isnt great as they can fit badly. I suspect being heated its OEM only anyway but check.
