Sub frame

Cali passed mot in June, had it serviced in August by my local VW mechanic (didn't do mot) on removal of under tray discovered the sub frame was badly corroded. New secondhand subframe fitted.

My mechanic friend said if I had had a leaking engine this most probably would not have corroded

Did it look like it rotted from the inside out or from the outside. Was going to look into what can be done to protect under mine.
It's a major bit, lucky to find a second hand part.

Looks like I'll be removing my undertray to have a look at mine.

I am in the same situation.
Although not that bad on the visible part behind the undertray, the rest is swollen from the rust.
I also have a second hand subframe from 2019.
I am going to try to protect it by getting rid of the black paint, applying some rust protection paint, and then spraying it with underbody coating.
Then pouring in a few liters of conservation wax on the inside.
Yes, my 2010 van has to serve me a few more years.
