T5 Bike Rack - Question: Correct method of retaining rack in the closed position?

Just planning ahead.. newbie question, possibly a silly one.. but if you don't know ask..

Q: What is the correct way to retain a bike rack in the closed position?

Is it with a wheel strap each side?

Is it with a bike clamp as in the pic?

I always used the straps as that’s the way it was installed by VW. The clamp seems to stick out too much, but just visually no doubt.
