Not happy about the rust on this engine component, after only 12 months. Anyone know what it is, and does yours look equally corroded?

It looks like the oil feed for the turbo, in which case this section will most probably get quite hot and will rust slightly.
I don't think its anything to be concerned about, looks like surface rust

In the good old days there would be plenty of oil flying around the engine compartment so nothing would ever corrode. These days of leak free engines means that you do get a little surface corrosion, but as @paulscryer says, it's not a problem.
 
VWs in the 80s and 90s had their engine compartments sprayed in wax at the factory. That stopped surface corrosion of engine parts very effectively. They've long since stopped that, presumably on grounds of cost. They don't even bother with under bonnet paint top coat now days.

If you don’t like the colour, which is normal as others have said, just spray it with some ACF50. It will turn black.
