Testing a leisure battery's condition

Is this something I can do or do I need an expert to do it for me?
Mother in law's Autosleeper Trident has gone up the Creek - control panel turns on but switches off again after a few seconds so no interior lighting.
Have emailed Autosleeper and they suggest testing the leisure battery first before looking at the control panel.
So I'm hoping someone can explain how I would go about doing it, do I need a voltmeter etc? And what readings would I need to be looking for to confirm whether or not the battery is faulty? As you can guess I ain't no electrician!

Take them off the vehicle. Charge them up and leave them for a few days to see if they hold charge.

How old are they?

Temporarily swap them for your Cali batteries to see if the control panel issue clears.

Alternatively fit new shiny ones.

Take to a local auto electrical company, they should be able to test them under load

A voltmeter should be enough to tell if its losing charge or not. As above disconnect from van then monitor over time.

The above may vary with different types of batteries but is roughly in the ballpark.
