We have a California T6 and so far it's proven our best ad hoc (ish) purchase to date. We've noticed the very efficient heater does 'tick' while in use. is this the norm?

Would be interested to hear from others. Thanks.

Yes, it is the sound of the lift pump taking diesel from the fuel tank. You have to lie in bed and think if it wasn't for that sound I'd be cold.

It is quite normal, something you get used to after a while and if you have ever had a Grandfather clock they sound similar.

I have spent many happy hours drifting off to sleep with the absurd picture of a Grandfather clock wedged in the front of the Cali :shocked

Welcome on board , lots to read on the forum about the heater and the things to take note regarding the heater.
You will get to know the specific things to look out with soon once you done a few trips.
@Meoncoast
the search function is there to help so can't see why one can mention this , special new members maybe are not aware of the search funcion as when browsing from a mobile divice it is not always visible on top of the screen but only in the menu.
Or should we ask the admins to remove the search function?
To many it is very helpfull , i use it every day to look things up ;)

Hello and :welcome nice that members being helpful and not just saying to new members try the search function.

that's a kind note and yes, so far, its been very helpful esp understanding why the noise exits! will save a call to the garage :happy

Yes agree in general a search is the best way to start. However, it appeared that depending on the search term (heater, heater noise etc.) I didn't find a relevant response even though I can filter for a user or generic post response. The search term HEATER generated 8 pages of threads which was rather time consuming to wade through. Don't see the need to remove the function and don expect users to be specific in the post title all the time to generate more relevant hits on the search term. Cheers for the reply though.

Very good to hear you found your way , the search function is not the best feature on this forum but does contribute a lot.
Also helpfull is using the correct subcategory when starting a new topic .

Anyway , the heater ticks , but it is a essential piece of kit i think in the Cali.
And overnight you don't need to set the heater high so the ticking is less....:D
Also the ticking noise is not constant ...

Has anyone found out why the Eberspacher pump is reported as noisey so often on a Cali?

I fit Eberspachers in my self-builds and mount the pump in more or less the same place as VW do on the Cali but have to listen very hard to hear it ticking.
I have found that if the output fuel pipe from the pump to the heated touches the floor or chassis it transmits some of the pump noise into the vehicle, I wonder if that's your problem.

normal. I find the ticking noise settles down after the initial burn cycle anyway as the fuel Is pushed into a burner matt that soaks up with diesel and then the fuel vapour in the matt is ignited combined with air from. the fresh air fan. once that Matt is soaked the lift pump slows down alot

I have the impression that my tick-tick is sometimes taking a break and them restart with a punch of warm air. When I close my eyes it sounds like a lighter which starts warm confi fire :)
However welcome sstflyers! Any chance to see some pictures?

I spoke to someone (potential seller) with a loud ticking on his Cali and he reported much improvement after investigation and adjustment.

I think one of the Eberspacher specialist independent installers/service guys would be the best to approach and they will be infinitely more knowledgeable than VW mechanics. Would be ideal to get their opinion.

This does seem to be more an issue with the Cali install rather than the Eberspacher itself.
