Touch screen and satnav problems

Thank you but I’d prefer someone else to do it, my DIY is lacking in any kind of skill! I’ll still save myself a fortune
If you have no inclination or the appropriate skills to fix your sat Nav , try :
Sat Nav systems Chertsey / Surbiton, they offer a postal service, (they tell you hos to remove your unit easily ) I have used them before, Excellent company

I’m booked in with them on Friday, thanks to this thread, and regained my composure after yesterday’s shocking VW Dealership quote!

Hamid &Adam are absolute gents, say hi from me, they will treat you well.

Ok Brett, i‘ve just dug out the the photos, it was actually nearly a year ago looking at them now! Memory a bit rusty but the photos pretty much show the order of things

First the part, here’s the ebay link to the digitiser… no surprises it’s gone up in price like the rest of world. This is supplied from the EU (Germany) but you could take a punt on the cheaper Chinese delivered one (does look a different supplier though). I bought the EU delivered version.

If this link doesn’t work down the line then just search for “VW digitiser TDO-WVGA0633F00039”

To fit you obviously need to remove the unit, clear the kitchen table and grab your screwdrivers, fairly sure the screws were all of the small torx variety. Then pull it apart to get to just the screen…

No great surprises here, pull off the front knobs, remove any sd cards and just look for the relevant screws…

Once here you’ll spot a small plastic clip holding each of the two card slot gubbins (below now removed laying on their side, were vertical)

then gently ease up the 2 ribbon connectors and slide them out…

Basically keep striping it down until you get to the glass unit.
Now get your new screen and after cleaning stick it over the existing one with the supplied 3m edge tape. Yes on top of the exisitng!
You will not get the original one apart as it is bonded throughout to the LCD. It is only 1mm thick and will still fit fine. In the last photo it looks like i helped the ‘fit‘ with a bit of sellotape here! Then put it all back together in reverse order but obviously connect the correct ribbon in. I left the existing one tucked out the way hence this is all completely reversible back to your original condition should you need to go back for any reason!

The end result is it looks and performs as per the original ‘working’ screen.
As said been a year now and mine’s performed perfectply.
Good luck, Will
Just to add, huge thanks - @WillSS - I’ve just fixed mine using your method! Saved me hundreds ££.

We’ve had problems with the the touch screen for a couple of years on a 5 year old California, the L hasn’t worked for a long time on the satnav..You can’t programme satnav on touch screen only on voice control. If you try and touch the satnav screen when it’s running it will no longer move with the route and even jumps to countries all over Europe, you can’t re centralise the screen. The radio programmes jump all over the place too, keeps changing stations .Took it into the van centre they diagnosed that the control unit behind the touchscreen needs replacing at a cost of £2200.I’m not even convinced that it will fix it because the letter L isn’t working.A customer who overheard said to me it sounds rubbish seek a second opinion.Any ideas I don’t want to spend all that to have the satnav still not 100%
How much is a replacement unit. ‍♂️
I have a 2019 anniversary edition with a similar problem.
I purchased a touch screen for less than €20 , installed it and it’s perfect now.
It’s a bit tricky to install as the unit has to be removed from the van and disassembled.
There is a YouTube video on how to carry out the repair.
Check out a good radio repair outlet in your area.
They may be willing to do it a a reasonable cost.
Good luck with it.

The touchscreen in my 2017 California Ocean has been faulty for several months and there was a buble forming on the RHS of the main screen. Andy from SAT-NAV-UK 07788 988178 is nearby: He's in West Yorkshire, I'm in Derbyshire. I drove to his place and he did the repair whilst I waited, about an hour. He fixed the faults by replacing both the touchscreen and the main screen and also updated maps. He removed the infotainment unit completely, took it out of the vehicle and replaced the screens in his workshop. Then refitted the unit and replaced the trim. Cost £345. Very happy with the repair. Highly recommend.

Our media unit lost its touch screen ability a couple of years ago.

Am thinking of getting around to getting a new one now.

Basically the silicon seal around the screen melted in the sun ..........

Repaired my screen (digitizer) today (finally...), ordered a digitizer from Amazon, costing 14 euro and was readily delivered the next day! Followed closely the steps in the appropriate YT film. It was easy to do and getting the Discover Media out of the car was indeed the most difficult part. Happy Camper again!

Same happened to my 2019 cali- quoted mega money for a new unit by vw. Got a good tip on here and took it to a guy in Liverpool £150 sorted we hike I waited - and worked perfectly since - if you are in NW I can dig details out for you

This post was so timely, I was putting the old VW head unit back in as hopefully trading our 2016 Ocean in soon. I had put an Alpine Halo 11 in but wanted to keep it. When putting the old VW head unit back on Sunday the touch screen no longer worked! Then, when I woke up Monday, this post was in my emails! I found the new screen on Amazon for £18 with next day delivery and it arrived this morning (Tuesday) I then fitted it to the new unit, using YouTube video. I just put it in and works fine! I am no electronics wizard but having done a few stereo installs it was relatively straightforward.
if you are out warranty this is an easy DIY fix for less than £20.
