Following 10 days between Noirmoutier and the Il de Ré I continued my annual trip to the Algarve.
Following a stop in Salamanca the Cali was running smoothly until a warning light appeared. It was orange and looked like coiled wire and when I stopped and checked it related to glow plugs. I immediately rang Heritage VW in Bristol and told them I had at least 300 miles to travel. They advised me not to do that so I set off to Caceres, about 30 miles away.
On starting the van the light was not present but after a short while, say 5 miles it appeared again and the van went into limp mode. I rang VW assistance who from start to finish were brilliant.
I was taken to the VW dealer in Plasencia on the Thursday lunchtime and was told they would not be able to look at the vehicle until Monday!
I hung around outside for the rest of the day and eventually they took it inside with a plan to look at it the next day.
It was diagnosed as needing a new turbo and the work was completed by Tuesday lunchtime. €1800.
VW assistance gave me €60 a night for 5 nights hotel accommodation and were in regular touch. They were very good.
I have had sainsbury’s travel insurance for 4 years giving cover on trips for up to 60 days and for a reason I can’t explain, the policy was not renewed this year in April.
However I 100% thought I was covered and rang many times being nicely pushed around because they have changed their main cover provider to be told today that I’m not covered.
I immediately asked for my cover to be renewed but because I’m in Portugal, on holiday, they wouldn’t do it.
I need travel insurance to cover my trips here by air but also our trips to France and Portugal in the California. So multiple trip insurance with at least a 60 day cover period.
Should I be looking specialised, like Red Pennant or are there other companies that offer the type of cover I need, without breakdown cover which I already have that members here recommended?
I’d be grateful for any help here.
Many thanks.
