Tyre wear

With regards to pressures, if you look inside the drivers door pillar there is a chart with all the pressures for the various tyre sizes and loadings.
I'd be interested to know how many owners inflate and deflate their tyres according to load.
 
Hi,our first Cali t5 180 dsg covered 22k before we had to change the front tyres and that was only because we had a blowout in France on the motorway tyre tread depth was 4 mm.and continentals . However we have had to change our current T6 204 dsg front tyres at 8900miles ,also continentals , the dealer said that this is quite common on the T6 ?
 
Just put new set on at 32k, supplied Hankook were fine so replaced with same. Set was actually cheaper than my old s max which was a pleasant surprise.

What size wheels and tyres?
We have the 16" Vanco FourSeasons all weather tyre on a150 dsg Beach and the fronts have still got an even 3.5mm, rears 7.5mm with nearly 26k miles from new. Really pleased with the wear rate.

Recently sold a similar van at 24,000 miles. Tyres looked almost new and I’d done a trip round Morocco and one round Europe.

What pressure do you put in them ? as Alan says center wear is caused by over inflation. Do you check when they are cold ? Is the gauge you use accurate ? I check mine against tyre fitters gauge which should be calibrated annually.
No mechanical fault that I've heard of will cause centre tire wear.

I have done 20,000 in 150 Dsg Ocean and still have 5mm left so you have a problem with your suspension/steering geometry

Is your van lowered? I understand that can affect tyre wear if the wheels are not laser-aligned after the lowering.
 
Not terribly, I replaced them more for peace of mind, as I was heading to Yorkshire (from Belfast) last Christmas and there was some snow.
Ok - that makes sense.

I've bought some ex-Ocean brand new 17" wheels and tyres to replace my part worn 16" Beach tyres.

My plan was to discard the current tyres and replace with winter tyres and save the 17" wheels for next spring, but I struggle to discard the old tyres with ~10,000 miles of legal life.

I’ve done similar..... I picked a set of new 17” Cascavals, fitted with new tyres for £90 more than the 4x tyres alone would’ve cost me.....

So I’ll run 1x set with winters and 1x with summers..... in hindsight, should’ve saved a grand and went for 16s on my original order!

Dealer quoted me £578.88 (supply and fit) for four new tyres. Four new 17" Davenport wheels and tyres cost £475, with the help of a wooden mallet I should be able to fit them myself when the time comes.
 
Ok, just back from the dealership where I had the wheel alignment carried out & 2 tires fitted to the 2 rear wheels.
The report showed more mis-alignment in the front wheels than the 2 rear wheels & this I’m told caused the rear wheels to drag more & wear more.
So they carried out the alignment & fitted the 2 turns for free (I supplied the tires).
Warranty only covers alignment up to 6k km or 6 months. This was a good gesture on their part.
Regarding the drive belt tensioners, I had recorded the noise on my phone and played it to the service manager who agreed with the issue. They’ll have to order this & they’ll be fitted under warranty when is convenient for me.
I also pointed out that there were clips under the front of the drivers seat missing /broken resulting in the upholstery becoming detached. This too will be fixed on my next visit.
I also discussed the leak in the window (rear at cooker) & on my next visit they’ll conduct a water test.
They will supply me with a courtesy car for the expected 2 days it will take them.
All in all, a good, positive result & a very acceptable performance from the dealership.
I do have the problem where the bellows has become detached at the front passenger upper corner, with the recent heat I expect. I didn’t bring this up as I’m going to have a go at popping it back in myself. If there’s a problem I let them know about it when I’m with them next.

Just changed our front tyres on our Ocean (150 Manual) after 19000 miles. nearside tyre was worn on outside edge - fitter advised that this was due to the many roundabouts on way to wife's work. Changed both fronts with like for like + £145 each :(
 
I had to change the front Continental PremiumContact 5s after just 8000 miles on my 204 DSG Ocean. I put on PremiumContact 6s, but those are looking like they will need to be replaced in a few months.
The Cali is my everyday drive so it's very stop/start. On the last service I got the alignment check and it was completely fine.

Next time I change I think I try a different tyre manufacturer. I would like crossclimate but they are not manufactured in the right size.

I had 20k miles out of the standard fit from new dunlops on our 180 DSG, so replaced them with exactly the same tyre.

A friend has a 180 DSG 4motion and has just had to have all 4 tyres replaced due to tracking and alignment issues causing uneven wear, but I've never had any such issue on our 2wd

I have a replacement set of 17’ wheels and nearly new tyres, but I’m thinking about replacing my current worn 16’ front tyres with winter tyres.

Is there any benefit in having winter tyres on the front, or if changing them should all four be changed?

General recommendation seems to be that new tyres should be fitted to the rear wheels, so you wouldn’t get any advantage.

Only if you want to cause an accident. Can’t you imagine what it would be like in snow or ice. Grip on the front and little if any on the back.

They are legal for another 0.7mm - will they hit 40k?
Lots of advice about new on the back. I'm personally not convinced that the advice for a car, being pushed to the limits, translates to a sedately driven California. I prefer my grip on the wheels that takes the bulk of the weight transferance under braking, out needs to when accelerating.
Changing the types might cause a problem as the grip might be significantly different...

Doesn’t have to be a sports car pushed to the limit, just adverse road conditions, and only needs to happen once and you’ll be converted. Especially if the Insurance company handling your claim disagrees.

0.9 mm legal wear remaining on the front, 2.4mm legal wear on the rear - they could possibly hit 50,000 miles if I switched from front to rear.

I managed to get 45k miles on same set of tyres in an amorak a few years ago. It’s all about the speed around corners :Stig:D
