Vandals trashed my windscreen

I know it's a pain to say the least, but as it's just the windscreen, it will be easier to fix than if it was bodywork damage.

It’s awful when you get targeted like this. But you are right when you say the screen is easier to replace than bodywork. And a heck of a lot cheaper too, you don’t pay the full excess just a nominal amount..
We know from the storm a couple of weeks ago. Ridgetile blown off the roof and landed on our year old Focus ST. Insurance job but the worst part is we are to blame as a storm is an act of God..So ongoing hike in insurance even though we were protected. I think a dash cam should be fitted as soon as you get the new windscreen.

Sorry to read this, hope you get it sorted soon.

My dad had a similar random attack (away from home) on his car a few years ago. Unfortunately, the inflictor(s) decided to jump up onto the bonnet, before launching rocks at the windscreen, inflicting a large dent in the bonnet at the same time. Amazingly, the bonnet was repaired perfectly by a paintless dent removal firm.

I had a work van side window done years ago and the idiot used his fist, the next 3/4 vans he used a rock.
The great thing was there was blood on the glass and I pointed this out to mr policeman and it got bagged up, and they got the twat!

Thank you, I had to share the pain as it’s so disappointing! It’s such a quiet sleepy neighbourhood and the only two cars they randomly targeted were mine and the care home’s transport for the disabled children. So while mine is inconvenient, they aren’t able to get out all weekend. What possesses people to do these things I don’t know.

Thankfully no bodywork damage, but I’m hoping when I talk to the insurers on Monday that I don’t lose my 1 year no claims (I only started driving 2 years ago so it’s a pain to start again with the 0 claims!).

Sorry to hear that.

A piece of advice - when you speak with your insurers, just inform them that the windscreen is broken. Don't mention the word vandalism.

Steer the conversation to
- hi, my windscreen is broken Ans needs to be replaced
- what happened
- is seems something like a stone has broken it
- were you driving it
- no it was parked.
- Any idea how it happened?
- it may have been a stone thrown up by another vehicle or someone may have thrown a stone, not sure.
- is it driveable?
- no, I would not be comfortable driving it

Keep the conversation on a similar track and they will send someone to replace the windscreen at home. You may have to pay a small excess, but a windscreen does not affect your NCB.

Infact, call up autoglass directly and speak with them. They will sort it out with your insurer.

Also, check your policy. Some policies do mention to call up autoglass directly. It does no harm to call them up first.

Alice, Kuri is giving you very good advice.

Shocking. What is wrong with people? As mentioned, no vandalism is acceptable against others property, but better the glass than body/paint damage.

Excellent advice. To add what Kurien says, insist on original OEM glass and not a third party product, which might be the go to for a windscreen specialist like Autoglass.

When you come to install a dash cam, fit a rear screen dash cam too. They can be adjusted for sensitivity and whilst the git might be aware of the forward looking cam, he is less likely to notice the rear ward looking cam. You might catch him as he walks away. There are cams available now that will automatically send images to your phone, so you can be alerted.

Yes a couple of years ago we had a tiny stone chip on the screen. Called auto glass directly. We paid £25 which is what the policy said (£125 for replacement). Wish I hadn’t bothered as it looked the same after he had done the repair. Although you don’t lose your NCB you do have to declare it when you apply for insurance from a different company and it does make a small difference to the price. It’s better than paying £500 plus yourself for a new screen.

Last night my campervan was victim of a random vandalism on the road. Such a shame - definitely another reason for a dash cam … feeling very sorry for myself!

Very upsetting.
Exactly the same happened to me in Eindhoven on the way to tour the VW factory.
Youth hockey tournament and one of the little dears smashed my windscreen.
It was Easter weekend so we were stuck for three days while new glass was ordered and fitted. Missed the factory tour and had to turn round and come straight home.

Totally agree, you must get OEM. Years ago I had Autoglass replace a windscreen with some cheap copy. When you washed it you could feel that the windscreen did not have a constant curvature. This meant when it rained the windscreen wipers missed bits.

We recently had a stone-cracked windscreen. Not sure how it happened as we were driving through a Norfolk village at the time with no vehicles near. Could have been a kid throwing a stone. It won’t necessarily be Autoglass who do the repair. It depends on who your insurers use. Ours was done by National Windscreens.

I would also advise getting the vehicle taken to their depot for repair, rather than letting them do it roadside or at your house (Perhaps use VW Assist if you have it). Their protective covers aren’t large enough for a van, so if there’s any dodgy weather about, they won’t be able to fit the screen. We are insured with LV and the windscreen repair didn’t affect our premium. We just had to pay the £95 excess.
