All for our Cali dog. Just a routine visit plus the AHC for travel tomorrow.

Meg cost £300 to buy. It looks like the annual vet’s bill will be £500 including two trips abroad.

And then every three years there is the rabies booster…

The flea and tick stuff from vets is a con expensive and not that good. I use the cheap stuff from pets at home (great buy poisonous to cats so don’t use if you have cats too).
Zeb only gets wormed once a year if I remember and he’s 11 and never had worms.

I have wondered if the vet is ripping me off with flea and worm prevention.

Frontline Flea and Tick at Pets at Home is £82 for a year (10-20Kg).

It is more or less the same price from the vet, so perhaps I’m not being ripped off too much.

I use the cheaper stuff either fibrotech med dog 4mths worth for £15 ish or Bob Martin there’s normally a deal buy one get one half price.
Great at killing ticks.
I thought you may of been using the rip off advocate stuff.

Local vet referred him to a Winchester vet for an MRI.

My own MRI private health insurance costs £440, the dog cost £4,000.

The total bill, was over £5,000 which included a prescription for 6 paracetamol costing £48.00.

I get my paracetamol for Max from Sainsbury's for 50p for 24.

They still do not know what's wrong with the dog.

No, and I understand all those nuances with dealing with a pet.

My last Dog to leave me, Bella, needed so much medical care in her last 6 months, I would not have worried over a penny, but my pet insurance was brilliant,

The problem with vets is the majority of its work is paid by insurance companies so they up the cost of things as it’s not you paying for it (well not in one chunk), so they can get away with it.

Advocate is cheap- £47 for a year for a 10-25Kg dog.

The real killer was the Animal Health Certificate- valid for just one entry into the EU for up to three months.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the breakdown of charges for the four items plus a consultation.

Blimey I must of been get well ripped off as I was paying a fortune (£30 mth)for that stuff on my husky 10urs ago. I can’t remember now.
Zeb rabies etc has lapsed so I dread to think of all the costs for him (annoying), that’s why we will be doing island hoping. Top of the list is Isle of Man

Our (usually extortionate) vet charges £16.60 a month for the health club which covers the flea treatment, worming, boosters and up to 4 basic consultations a year. As the consultations covers squeezing the anal glands ( the dogs before anyone asks) I think its worth every penny.
It also gets us 20% discount on the special prescription diet.

We calculated the vets bills so far have been just under £12k in three years. Sainsbury's pet insurance have paid out £11k of that and had a premium of £18/month from us. Its the only insurance policy that I have ever really benefitted from having.

Veterinary market is worth of $100bn globally. It’s been consolidating at a rate of knots as investors see it as a cash cow. I can’t see that changing as people love their pets and many would put themselves into debt for the sake of their pet’s health.

There is a FB group for Animal Health Certificates. There are vets specialising in doing them now for a competitive price.

Lots of vets charge a lot for them as they are fiddly & need the vet to be Govt approved.

It seems a complete waste of time for the vets, who are overstretched anyway.

We had a very steep bill after a broken ankle two years ago (~£300 for an amputation or ~£3000 for repair- we went for the repair). But even with that enormous bill, self insuring has probably been cheaper than a decent pet insurance. John Lewis quotes £42, £65 or £75 per month, all lifetime cover, for £3,000; £7,500 or £12,000 limits.

I’m not paying £500 per year to insure a dog I bought for £300! But if you asked me a few years ago if I’d pay £3,000 to repair a broken leg on a dog that cost me £300 I’d have said “no way”. Funny that…

I’ve heard that the problem with cheap policies is that they won’t cover you for longer than a year once a condition is discovered. E.g. dog develops diabetes, you are ok for a full year, then no longer covered.

With lifetime cover, if your pet develops diabetes, treatment is covered for the rest of its life, subject to the annual payout limit.

The top level of Sainsburys is lifetime cover. It was recommended by our vet.

We had to deal with with the local vet, a specialist vet, overnight hospital & finally the RVC all for one incident. It turns out our Cockapoo is allergic to whatever is in a general anasthetic!

All were happy to do treatment with just the excess paid, as they knew they would get paid direct by Sainsbury's , the local vet had a fairly short list of insurers that they would work at risk for & a long list where you pay first & its down to you to get the money back.

Its the same as car insurers - you don't know how good they are until you need to make a claim.
