Just had a call back from VW on this issue and they aware of the problem.
What has happend is anyone that extended their VW assistance past the three years that came as standard have now been transferred on to a RAC PERSONAL policy. This means that VW no longer keeps a record of renewals hence why people are being asked to renew with RAC and not VW Assistance.
I would suggest anyone that has been sent an RAC membership card in the past six months to contact VW as although your cover is virtually the same it means you will not be able to request a dedicated VW technician to come out to you as they now all work for the AA, also it now means that the membership is in name and not registration number ( so if you lend the van to someone the cover will not be valid)
